Beijing just pulled the plug on refined fuel exports right as global energy markets face a massive squeeze. By hoarding fuel for Golden Week, Chinese officials are choosing domestic stockpiles over regional stability, leaving Asian neighbors exposed. Reuters reported that Beijing ordered refiners to suspend gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel exports beyond Hong Kong and Macau for October. State-owned PetroChina canceled overseas shipments committed over the past two weeks, while Zhejiang Petrochemical scheduled zero export loadings. The issue isn't capacity. Commercial diesel inventories sit 20 million barrels below pre-war levels, and gasoline is 9 million short. Refiners want to capture high export margins, but Beijing treats foreign buyers as secondary, forcing refiners to hoard fuel at home. This sudden retreat strips vital supply from Asian markets already strained by Middle East disruptions, sending crude higher and tightening regional margins.
