As a primary driver for talent attraction and development, the Cincinnati Innovation District has distinguished the region as a hub for a variety of companies that need talent. In doing so, it has become a model for Ohio and for cities across the nation. bizjournals.com/cincinnati/new…
Developers and communities can and should work together. But if we're serious about fixing the problem, it's time to act expeditiously to build more housing. [End rant]
We don't need carte blanche development. What we need is more housing. And we need it, I don't know, about 25 years ago. Continuing to hold these projects up makes the problem worse, not better.
More from report: "...when regulations help contribute to the growing regional housing shortage, they ought to be thoroughly reviewed and reformed to better balance oversight and encourage new development.
Case in point for the UC development above, from our Embracing Growth report: "Outdated policies like parking minimums and arbitrary height restrictions can serve as impediments to new development."
If we're serious about doing the latter, maybe it's time to rethink the ways we do development. We have some ideas on what we think that should be. We wrote them in a report called Embracing Growth. cincinnatichamber.com/docs/default-s…
Do we as a region want to fall back to low/negative growth of stagnating regions like Pittsburgh, Cleveland, St. Louis? Or do we want to build a region that's growing like Minneapolis, KC, Indy, Columbus, etc?
We don't have enough housing in Cincinnati. We aren't building housing fast enough to make up for the shortage. And other places in the country are passing us by.
A few words to say about this. Not even about this project specifically, but about a city/region that continues to get in its own way of fixing the problems we have with housing.
