I’ve lived in Japan for 3 years. Here’s the 3 most memorable things about cars: 1. They drive little cars. “Kei” cars are basically cars with 600cc motorcycle engines in them. They feel like driving a super charged golf cart. They pretty much max out at 55 kph. 2. Their “safety check” (Called “Sha-Ken) is every two years and costs thousands of dollars, you’re not given it until you actually get everyone done. Many just end up buying a new car. 3. Their drivers license examiners fail foreigners on principle. My friend failed 5 times. When I told my supervisor I got it on the second attempt he was surprised and said that most foreigners fail at least twice. The only person I know who passed was a female who wore a rather revealing top on a hot summer day.
