Glad to see the Section 174 tax fiasco get attention from @friedberg and @Jason. The only thing I wish they had added is that it's vitally important for founders in Idaho, NC, and SD to call their senators to advocate for HR 7024. Those senators are the problem.

Since it's tax day, thought I'd share that Section 174 added $236,000 to my taxable income--that's $236k that was used to pay *other people* but I still have to pay state and federal income tax on it. Incredible work, @SenateGOP, @MikeCrapo
We only have the rough calculations right now, but looks like our tax bill is going to go up by ~$100,000 on profits that we never had because of the craziness of IRC section 174. We are a small business. We write software. We can't deduct our salaries fully. Pass HR 7024 now!
In the latest push for his tax bill, Finance Chair @RonWyden released Treasury data saying 3.8M small businesses took now-expired tax breaks in 2021 that the bill would revive Wyden is hitting R's for blocking the bill. There have also been calls for Schumer to hold a vote --

Section 41 (R&D tax credits) is different from the section (174) that mandates amortization of R&D expenses, including all software development. Amortization is not optional under Section 174; it is mandatory.
@estuspete @theallinpod @Jason @Andrew_Robl @JasonKoon @phil_hellmuth @Google That’s not true. And it’s not the R&D tax credit (section 41) that is the issue. The new law says that all software development counts must be filed as a section 174 expenditure. And it also says that all section 174 expenditures must be amortized. This law changed in 2022.

One thing to note is that a company that breaks even and doesn’t grow will stop owing tax after five years, BUT they will have still have paid insane taxes for five years that they can’t get back!

@bryce Currently the U.S. tax code actively discourages companies from hiring engineers because most of what a business pays an engineer in their first year of employment falls to bottom line as fake profit on which the business owes real tax.

@mjwhansen Unfortunately in this case I think it's that the customer is saying they want something they dont. We get them on the phone and often they just really don't have zero motivation to use a CRM but know they need one, so they sign up and refuse to engage with it.
