It is a basic principle of American democracy that the government can’t selectively target individuals simply because of their political beliefs or what they say. But that’s exactly what the Trump Administration is doing to Congresswoman Ilhan Omar of Minnesota. To understand why this is so appalling, it’s important to know the facts. Congresswoman Omar came to this country with her father when she was 12 years old. Five years later, her father became a naturalized citizen. If Ilhan had been 18 at the time, she would have had to apply for citizenship separately. But because she was 17, she became a naturalized citizen automatically. Congresswoman Omar went on to graduate from college, work as a community organizer, become the first Somali-American legislator elected to public office in the U.S., and win a seat in Congress. There, she has been one of the Trump Administration’s fiercest critics, which has led the president to repeatedly single her out as someone who he believes does not belong in this country. Now the Administration is actively trying to deport Congresswoman Omar, seemingly based solely on the unsubstantiated theory that she was actually 18 when her father was naturalized, and therefore is not a citizen. Federal agents have raided her home, confiscated personal records, and seized her phone — all to try and uncover a nonexistent smoking gun from 20 years ago that will somehow make their case. Think about that. The full weight of the federal government is being brought down on a law-abiding elected official because she has dared to criticize the president. And it’s not the first time this has happened. Under President Trump, the Justice Department has repeatedly gone after those he considers his political enemies — from the Attorney General of New York, to the former head of the FBI, to members of the Federal Reserve. In those cases, the prosecutions either stalled or were dismissed for having no basis in law, and the same is likely to happen in this case. But not before Congresswoman Omar’s life has been turned upside down, her legal bills have piled up, and she’s been forced to spend time fighting unsubstantiated charges instead of serving the people of Minnesota. The fact that any president, or any administration, is willing to engage in such transparent efforts to intimidate someone should outrage all Americans, regardless of how they feel about Congresswoman Omar’s political views. Because if this becomes the new normal, there’s no reason to believe it will stop with her — or that future presidents, in either party, won’t do the same.

It's actually mind-boggling that @JDVance would say Watergate would be a "10 hour story" today. Just to review, Nixon's aides authorized a break-in of the DNC HQ to install bugging equipment--in a caper foiled by a night watchman, who called police. They then enlisted the CIA to mislead the FBI that the break-in was related to a probe of malign foreign actors. The entire operation was paid for by a slush fund controlled by the WH. The WH also enlisted the IRS to probe hundreds of Nixon's political enemies. The AG, the WH COS and several other top aides all were convicted and served time for their involvement in the crimes and coverup. Nixon was caught on his own secret tape system conspiring with them but was pardoned a month after he resigned by his successor, Gerald Ford. That Vance thinks this would be a "10 hour story" today speaks volumes about the moral and ethical degradation of the Trump era.

If Keir Starmer does resign, history will look back on his reign and scratch its head as to why the hell he was so hated. On paper, he's probably delivered more to working British people in such a short time than any PM for decades. After inheriting an absolute mess: NHS waiting lists fallen. Worker's rights improved. Rail operators nationalised. Improved relations with EU and improved UK's global reputation. Removed non-dom tax status. Halved childcare costs. Boosted state pensions. Lowest homicide rate in 50 years. Lifted 550k children out of poverty. Immigration vastly reduced. We are in the age of billionaire funded misinformation, whose sole purpose is to topple democratically elected leaders, and insert leadership that favours the wealthy elites over the working people. Looks like the game plan is working...

A statement from the family of Alex Pretti, obtained by CNN: "We are heartbroken but also very angry. Alex was a kindhearted soul who cared deeply for his family and friends and also the American veterans whom he cared for as an ICU nurse at the Minneapolis VA hospital. Alex wanted to make a difference in this world. Unfortunately he will not be with us to see his impact. I do not throw around the hero term lightly. However his last thought and act was to protect a woman. The sickening lies told about our son by the administration are reprehensible and disgusting. Alex is clearly not holding a gun when attacked by Trump’s murdering and cowardly ICE thugs. He has his phone in his right hand and his empty left hand is raised above his head while trying to protect the woman ICE just pushed down all while being pepper sprayed. Please get the truth out about our son. He was a good man. Thank you."

What you’re seeing is the actual corruption you were led to believe occurred under other presidents. Every conspiracy they created about Obama and Biden is an actual thing Trump is doing 10000 times in plain sight

I've covered politics for a long time. I covered Obama, Trump, Biden and now Trump again. 4 administrations. Nearly 20 years. I have seen some shit. I have seen some corruption. I have NEVER seen anything like we've witnessed in the last 11 months.

Over the past few decades, America has spawned a meritocracy that has come to dominate business, government, media and culture. The populist right wants to replace it with something older, cruder and more corrosive: a naked plutocracy—rule by the very rich. My take:

Watching him walk through that door and head to his barstool, America couldn’t wait to say hi to Norm every Thursday night. George Wendt was an essential part of the genius of ‘Cheers’ and he will be missed by the millions who loved him. Norm was all of us. A regular guy who finished his hardworking day wanting to be surrounded by friends and a frosty beverage. We’re proud to raise a glass and toast a true comedy legend.

Pete Buttigieg breaks down DEI for everyday folks—keeps it simple without being condescending. “The opposite of diversity is uniformity. The opposite of equity is inequity. The opposite of inclusion is exclusion. I don’t know a lot of people who think we’d be better off if our lives had more uniformity, inequity, and exclusion.” @PeteButtigieg Our problem is clear though: too many value uniformity over inclusion, and they’re the ones running the government today. 🧵

The guys who wrote the Constitution were nobody's fools. They created a separation of powers so that one person could not amass enormous power. It should frighten EVERY American — conservatives and progressives — that we now have a president who doesn't respect the rule of law.

Generations of American patriots, from our revolution onward, have fought for the principles Zelenskyy is risking his life to defend. But today, Donald Trump and JD Vance attacked Zelenskyy and pressured him to surrender the freedom of his people to the KGB war criminal who invaded Ukraine. History will remember this day— when an American President and Vice President abandoned all we stand for.

Today, Pres. Trump gave a sweeping legal reprieve to nearly 1,600 defendants who attacked the US Capitol on January 6, 2021, including those convicted of violent crimes & seditious conspiracy. More than 150 police officers were assaulted during that attack. Some eventually died.
