None of this makes these bad contracts. They're built for traders who want tomorrow's temperature. A business needs something else: the right station, the right window, enough size, or an honest "nothing fits." That matching is the whole job.

4. What's missing. Price contracts for coffee, cocoa, sugar, wheat, corn, soybeans and cattle: 0 open today. Jet fuel and heating oil: 0. There are a few state crop-yield contracts. A coffee roaster still can't buy coffee.
3. Size. The Knicks bar's hedge paid ~$13,500. We checked whether $10,000 of cover could be bought on each of the 210 temperature contracts still in play. At any price: 0 of 210. Fuel is the exception: gas and diesel filled $1,000 at ~2¢ over the quote.
2. Timing. Every daily temperature contract (48 of them, 24 cities) closes within 36 hours. You can hedge tomorrow. You can't hedge August.
1. One station per city. NYC settles at Central Park. Chicago temperature settles at Midway; Chicago rain, at O'Hare. Last 12 months, LaGuardia hit 90°F on 20 days. Central Park: 12.
