Alcohol destroys so many relationships, minds & bodies - why do we still celebrate and laugh at excessive drinking ?? I don’t understand it - it seems such a uniquely British thing - do other nations boast about it ?
@parsnip45 When I did drink, I didn't notice this at all really, since stopping drinking it's kinda staggering the amount of drink related behaviour in everything. I mean soap's for example are built entirely around drinking!
@parsnip45 In Mediterranean countries, it's seen as uncool among teenagers to be drunk and staggering about. And yes, that "gin o clock" thing is pretty sad. People shouldn't be doing jobs that make them so miserable that they need to drink strong alcohol to cheer themselves up afterwards.
@parsnip45 I think it's because this is such a shit country, so much stress. I drink when I'm stressed.
@parsnip45 It’s the obligatory 6am airport beers that baffle me 🤷♀️
@parsnip45 In many other countries alcohol is introduced into family meals/settings a lot earlier so any "mysticism/coolness" about drinking is removed; who wants to do a thing a lot which your parents don't mind or which you gave already been doing for years?
@parsnip45 I think it's celebrated by many because it's something we do and experience together and it can contribute towards good times. However, it's abused by too many and makes monsters of many.
@parsnip45 No it's not just here. I've worked with This Naked Mind and it's a global problem. But things are starting to shift. Canada now has health warnings on alcohol and a few countries have openly said there's no safe limit.
@parsnip45 I did a lot of travel when I was younger, and yes, it seems to be a universal thing, guilty of it myself, but as I got older and now have known a fair few lives devastated by alcoholism, I have to admit it's not big and it's not clever. Possibly the most dangerous drug in society
@parsnip45 I do agree with your points about what it can destroy, but I’ve been sitting here for a while and hand on heart going out is probably still my favourite thing to do. It’s had negative effects on my life but many positives too.
@parsnip45 You're right 100% it's the binge drinking thing. Relaxing opening hours I think helped. It seems to be changing in attitude with youngsters, more and more are finding its not necessary to go to excess. It's more damaging than drugs
@parsnip45 Twitter is weird like that - tons of likes for someone celebrating a sobriety anniversary, tons of likes for someone obviously drinking (or about to drink) to excess… Keen on a few drinks myself, but careful to manage my drinking too.
@parsnip45 My daughter doesn’t drink and has found it difficult as everyone she works with goes to the pub on a Friday. By 8:30 everyone else is drunk and she just wants to home
@parsnip45 It is the only drug you are encouraged to take for pleasure, advertising plays a big part of making it look good. It’s no wonder people want to replicate it. Not everyone is able to regulate their intake, ending up with both ends of the spectrum of consumption.
@parsnip45 The Spanish laugh in disgust at the Brits being so alcohol motivated. Over here they drink, but they drink to enjoy and over a long period of time.
@parsnip45 I think brits have a strange relationship with alcohol. It’s more of a sociable thing with meals in other European countries, you don’t really see binge drinking unless it’s brits abroad. We have a bad rep, people think we’re all piss heads 🤦🏻♀️
@parsnip45 It’s so ingrained in people that alcohol is fine. If you say you don’t drink, people ask why. They ask why you don’t smoke or inject heroin!
@parsnip45 I restrict my intake but the snag is that I really like being drunk. It makes me happy. Every time. Drinking can be an awful thing for lots of people but it honestly enhances my life.
