@TheSimonEvansX “Early bleedin’ Schoenberg!” That sketch of two supermarket checkout ladies discussing the previous night’s disappointing program (“Rubbish!”) at the Royal Festival Hall. I think. I do remember clearly that phrase whenever I’m reminded of Alan Coren—or listening to Schoenberg.
@robkhenderson@rorysutherland she’ll ever figure out how to get a cup of tea in the morning, let alone work the Sonos system. So now I’m to show her how to do everything? Please advise.
@robkhenderson@rorysutherland Too funny! There is though a knock-on problem. I’m 62, and after a long happy ongoing marriage throughout which I made myself the indispensable tech guy, my wife with half a thought about statistics, and with a gentle diplomatic tone, sometimes wonders how, if I go first
@TheSimonEvans Absolutely brilliant, Simon. I hear those lines differently now, with your insight. And, both you and Shakespeare move me when I think on my own father. Thank you.
@ToKTeacher I don't understand: is that quote a "misconception"? Or is it a mantra that should be taken seriously? Or a mantra that, thank goodness, few take seriously? Or is it your view that past performance informs a good explanation for a guess about future results?
@MrJamesMay In this the country of proper bacon, you're within arm's reach of simply the best bacon I've found in 34 years' research. Javi's Breakfast and Lunch, Sandy and 63rd Ave. Good luck.
@DavidDeutschOxf “Their memories of old times were wildly divergent.” What an interesting sentence! I can’t explain why, yet, but it hints at something important.
@reasonisfun@DavidDeutschOxf Using “passive-aggressive” sounds diagnostic and high-falutin. “Aggressive” works just fine. Or better,“threatening”. It’s a matter of taste, perhaps, and naturally you’re welcome to disagree!
@PhilipHensher “Bonhomie” absolutely! There’s an infectious joy, a having-fun-with-it (and you). Really great to have put things down and listened along with you, and enjoyed your brilliant words. Thanks for the inspiration.
@PhilipHensher Hah! I’d have been stumped, but for the very end, which quotes his “Power of Love” setting, and which had been in my mind all through, so maybe I’d have guessed in a blind test. . . Really delighted to hear it. Thanks. Also, RNCM wind band! Tim Reynish! A treat!
@DeutschExplains@DavidDeutschOxf Dang. I meant to say “inaccurate” quotation. Maybe someone reading this will benefit from tripping over that problem too!
@DeutschExplains@DavidDeutschOxf (just occasionally) awkward sentences are a feature rather than a bug if they create a problem for you to solve and thereby increase your knowledge in a memorable way. What fun!
@DeutschExplains@DavidDeutschOxf Funny, I read that, misunderstood it, thought it could be an accurate quotation, read it some more, saw at last what it meant, agreed with the idea, thought about remarking here that it was an unusually (for David) awkward sentence, then realized (yet again) that sometimes
@PhilipHensher All best wishes for a successful operation and a speedy recovery. If I thought prayer did any good, I would do that. Instead I’ll crack open your latest novel, and enjoy thinking of you.
@DavidDeutschOxf The fun thing is I read too quickly, got the wrong answer. Then I quickly saw my error, and got it right. The next fun thing would be if the AI could do likewise. The next fun thing would be if it were fun for the AI.
