The Irish government is reportedly planning to deport to the UK any illegal immigrants who have entered Ireland from Britain territory. So what’s to prevent the British government from deporting to Ireland any such immigrants who have entered Britain from the EU?
There has been much comment on the diversity of the Turner prize short list. It is indeed diverse. Only one major category is missing: white British
Whether the Rwanda Act is a good piece of legislation is a matter of opinion. But its critics need to explain whether they accept that without it any illegal immigrant who manages to arrive in Britain is effectively guaranteed the right to remain.
The Staendige Vertretung, one of my favourite kneipes in Berlin, now serves vegan currywurst. I used to think that, having lived there for nearly six years, I had some small understanding of Germany. I clearly don't.
It seems beyond belief that the incompetent (to put it mildly) lawyer who prosecuted the Sub-Postmasters is now responsible at the Post Office for their compensation. Can no-one get a grip on this toxic organisation?
Not easy to understand the argument against banning the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps. We have an Embassy in Tehran which is (in theory) capable of talking to the Iranian government. Would it be shut down if we banned the IRGC?
Lord Cameron is wasting his time offering advice to Israel on how to respond to the Iranian attack. He would do better to focus on the appalling behaviour of Israeli settlers on the West Bank and the complicity of the Israeli army in their attacks on Palestinian civilians.
The report on the Indian election on this evening's BBC Ten O'Clock news was poor journalism. It was all about Modi and all the interviews were with supporters of Modi. No mention of any other party and no interview with anyone from the opposition.
Civil servants should indeed, post-Covid, stop working from home and get back to their offices. Providing of course they still have one. Many government departments, for example the Foreign Office, have sold off part of their real estate and don't have desks for all their staff.
Britain is playing a role - not a leading role, but an important secondary role - in the Middle East by helping to defend Israel. Neither the EU itself nor any of its member states are playing any role at all.
Sad to see that Mark Urban is leaving the BBC. He has been one of its most talented journalists and one of the few with a deep understanding of security and defence issues. Good luck with whatever comes next.
In the former AWRE building at Orfordness, which I visited on Easter Monday, an inert WE 177 warhead is on display. How long, I wonder, before the British government realises that, with hindsight, it was a mistake to decommission this series of tactical nuclear weapons.
The European Court of Human Rights ruling that Switzerland has broken international law on climate change will rightly be condemned as an egregious example of judicial activism. But it shows how foolish it is for governments to give legal effect to what are policy decisions.
An interesting snippet of electoral forecasting in today's Times. The projected landslide for Labour in the forthcoming election will be achieved with a vote share pretty much the same as they got in 2017. The vagaries of the British political system.
If diversity is to be a qualification for the next Chancellor of the University of Oxford, then one trend should be reversed. Since Richard Cromwell in 1657 every Chancellor has been a member of the House of Lords.
As a graduate of the university of Oxford I was looking forward to turning up in my MA gown again to vote for the next Chancellor. Alas with postal voting no longer a requirement.
RIP Hella Pick, a great journalist. Always curious, never cynical, intensely competitive, she was a trailblazer who came to the UK on the Kindertransport. Incredible life theguardian.com/media/2024/apr…
The Israeli Defence Forces now defend their killing of the aid workers on the grounds that they believed, mistakenly, there was a Hamas fighter in one of the vehicles. They apparently regarded the murder of six innocent civilians as a price worth paying in order to take him out.
So sad to hear of the death of Hella Pick. An outstanding journalist with a remarkable depth of knowledge about the world and a genuine passion for her profession. For my generation in the Foreign Office she was a great source of wisdom and someone we all hugely admired.
The Israeli Defence Forces still haven't answered the key questions about why they fired misssiles on three separate aid vehicles. Did they know they were aid vehicles? What danger did they think the vehicles posed? Who, and with what authority, authorised the killings?

Wow, this is incredibly poor. He's relying on a script, and the script is pure legospeak. His main criticism is that the FCDO is focussed on "this idea of the national interest" ... and only idea is to change the building. Shesh, hope rest of senior FCDO aren't so hopeless.

When Robin Cook was Foreign Secretary, he had a huge portrait of an oriental ruler removed from his office because it had the wrong vibe for New Labour Britain. He then welcomed a Nepalese delegation, who were very offended that Cook removed a portrait of their prime minister.

If I were Prime Minister I would appoint a troubleshooter in Downing Street whose job it would be to spot scandals like the Post Office early on, and stop them. One duty would be to read Private Eye every issue, and the trade press.
Public discourse on Post Office scandal has been too selective on who should be held to account or blamed. There's not been enough focus on Fujitsu; or to other CEOs apart from Paula Vennells, such as Adam Crozier; or to the many postal services ministers other than Ed Davey.
6 January 1955. Comedy actor, Rowan Atkinson, was born in Consett, County Durham. He starred in Not The Nine O’Clock News, then as Blackadder (pictured), and Mr Bean. He’s regarded as one of the most original British comic talents.
Given Fujitsu's role in creating the deeply flawed Horizon computer system at the heart if the postmasters' scandal, it would be interesting to know if the British government is still awarding them contracts. If so, why?
