For the record, we already have this agreement. The 1951 Defense of Greenland Agreement, signed April 27, 1951 under NATO, already lets the U.S. establish and operate "defense areas" on the island. It's rent-free, has no expiration date, and is very hard for either side to terminate on its own. It also lets U.S. ships, aircraft, and vehicles move freely for defense purposes. At the height of the Cold War the U.S. had dozens of bases and radar stations there, and it has since shut all but Pituffik. A 2004 amendment added the Greenlandic flag and a Greenlandic liaison officer at Pituffik, and it lets the U.S. increase troops as long as Denmark and Greenland get advance notice.
