The actual answer is “reinvestment risk.” 30 years will go by. Inflation will have eaten up about half your money’s value. So $56k becomes $28k. Your $1mil freed up will be worth $500k. Now you’re 60 with half as much money and half as much income as you had before. Meanwhile the guy who kept his money in the S&P probably has about $6 million and is getting $60k/year in dividend (which will be about $3mil and $30k in today’s dollars).

The AI infra trade is splitting. I still like $NBIS and $IREN for compute growth, but the easy rerating is behind us. $CORZ, $WULF and $APLD are already proving they can turn power into billable capacity, while $HUT has arguably the cleanest landlord structure. $CRWV has monster demand, but I’m not ignoring the financing machine required to feed it. I’m done paying premiums for announced GW. Power > contracts > financing > energized MW > revenue. That conversion chain is where I think the next alpha comes from.

Prominent US monetary economist Charles Calomiris warned in 2023 that the US fiscal path was already unsustainable. He said that surging debt and deficits would eventually lead to investors becoming unwilling to finance this madness, forcing the Fed to step in and print the difference. “There is no interest rate where we could sustain these deficits going forward.” Fast forward to today, and the whole situation has gotten way worse. Debt is approaching $40T, deficits are running around $2T, interest expenses are exploding and foreign demand for USTs is weakening. Trump said it best: “Inflation can pay down debt very rapidly.” He is right... The US has reached a point where inflation isn't just the problem anymore. Inflation is becoming the cure to overindebtedness. You either allow inflation to erode the real value of the debt, or you fight inflation with higher rates and make the fiscal situation even worse. We don't own enough hard assets for what's coming.
