Seems @SVB_Financial is failing because of a decision to maximize return (by maybe 100 bps) on their safest asset (T-bills) followed by macro bloat and external excess. Unfortunately it’s killing one of the most important institutions in American innovation.

…and some big names called their companies and said get your money out… and the run began.

Interesting that the failure of @SVB_Financial arose from a pretty simple bad decision by management: to invest too much in 10 year treasuries. Rates continued to rise making those treasuries unsellable, which was fine as deposits grew from venture businesses raising lots of cash

@markyzaguirre @BillAckman @SVB_Financial The purpose of the government stepping in is to avoid contagion not bail anyone out. This event was triggered by a combination of poor cash planning (SVB locking too much cash up for too long in lower yielding bonds) and rapidly shifting macro conditions (rates, deposits > run)

@bznotes 100%. SVB is an A Class institution that has been a trusted partner for the venture community for decades. Not enough people have appreciation for all they have meant to innovation and how big of a hole could be left behind. Hope they make it.

@realDonaldTrump Trump declares the GAME OVER after the third quarter because “look I was ahead then. I’m done. It’s over. I win. This is a sham. Wah wah.” #notthewaydemocracyworks

@sfchronicle @jilltucker Merit still should have its place in America. Why couldn’t we have relied on other means (like recommendations from middle school teachers) to select this one class?

@sfchronicle @jilltucker Unfortunate. My fear 1) more rich kids will go to private school 2) fewer lower income children will have the opportunity of top notch education 3) more families will leave SF 4) great teachers will leave Lowell, slowly destroying a once shining light of public education.
