October 20, 1805. An Austrian field marshal surrendered his entire army to Napoleon without fighting a battle. The next day, the British destroyed the French fleet at Trafalgar. Two days. Two of the most complete victories of the entire Napoleonic era, won by opposite sides, and neither one knew about the other yet. The Ulm campaign is the best thing Napoleon ever did, and almost nobody can name a battle in it, because that is the point. Karl Mack von Leiberich took an Austrian army of around 70,000 into Bavaria in September expecting to hold the line of the Danube and the Iller until the Russians arrived from the east. Reasonable plan. He concentrated around the city of Ulm and waited. What he expected was Napoleon coming at him through the Black Forest, the obvious route, the one every French army had used. What Napoleon actually did was move roughly 200,000 men from the Channel coast across Germany in about six weeks, in multiple corps on parallel roads, and bring them down on the Danube east of Ulm. Behind Mack. Between Mack and Vienna, and between Mack and the Russians. That march is the thing to look at, not the battle. Napoleon had reorganised the army into self-contained corps, each with its own infantry, cavalry and guns, each able to fight alone for a day or two until the others arrived. That meant he could spread an army across a hundred miles of road, move it fast, and concentrate it when contact came. Nobody else in Europe could do that yet. By the second week of October, Mack's army was in a pocket and did not fully understand it. There was fighting. Wertingen, Günzburg, Haslach, and Elchingen on October 14, where Ney forced a bridge crossing and took the heights, which closed the last practical escape route north. Some Austrians did get out. Archduke Ferdinand and a cavalry force broke north and away. Mack stayed in Ulm. On October 20 he marched his remaining men out and surrendered. The usual figures are around 23,000 to 27,000 men handed over on the day, with tens of thousands more lost across the campaign as a whole through the fighting and the units captured piecemeal. The numbers vary by source, so treat the exact count loosely. The whole army was gone either way. The line attributed to Napoleon is that he had destroyed the Austrian army by simply marching. Whether or not he said it in those words, it is an accurate description of what happened. Mack went home and was court martialled, stripped of his rank and honours, and sentenced to death. It was commuted to prison and he served about two years. He is one of the few generals in history whose name became a synonym for incompetence in his own country's language. And then October 21. Off Cape Trafalgar, Nelson took 27 ships of the line into a combined Franco-Spanish fleet of 33 and broke it, capturing or destroying around 22 enemy ships without losing a single British one. Nelson was shot by a marksman from the Redoutable during the fighting and died that afternoon knowing he had won. So in 48 hours, France won total command of the European continent and permanently lost command of the sea. Those two facts define the next ten years. Napoleon could not invade Britain, so he tried to strangle its trade with the Continental System instead. Enforcing that system is what took him into Spain in 1808 and into Russia in 1812. Ulm and Trafalgar, back to back, created the exact strategic trap that eventually destroyed him. He walked into it at the highest point of his career, in the same week he was being handed an army for free.

#DidYouKnow - Napoleon Never Abandoned Joséphine! ❤️ In December 1809, Napoleon divorced Joséphine because he needed an heir to secure his dynasty. But despite ending their marriage, he did not abandon the woman he had once crowned Empress of the French. 🏠 He ensured that Joséphine retained her beloved Château de Malmaison, provided her with a substantial annual allowance (2 million francs per year), and granted her additional residences and the continued title of Empress. 💂 Napoleon also continued writing to her and checking on her well-being. In April 1812, he made an unannounced visit to Malmaison, where the former couple walked together in the gardens—a poignant reunion before his disastrous Russian campaign. 👑 Joséphine died in May 1814, but Napoleon's concern for her had continued long after their marriage ended. Even when ambition forced Napoleon to divorce Joséphine, he never entirely severed the bond they shared. #josephines #empressjosephine #napoleon #truelove #love
