Don't miss the next LPE NYC event organized w/@ActionLabNY & @LPE_Project on Law & Power Building April 7 (noon - 6pm)!! It has a 🤯 line-up of organizers, activists, & scholars thinking about the uses and limits of law as a 🔨 for transformative change! lpeproject.org/events/tal-law…

Details and registration for the event are available here: lpeproject.org/lpe-nyc
Although a big part of the launch will be about getting to know each other and talking collectively abt what we want LPE NYC to be, we are also thrilled to announce a 🔥🔥🔥 line-up of speakers to kick us off: @AnaMariaforNY, @orangebegum, Angela Harris, and Kim Phillips-Fein!!
This state Senate is committed to repairing the mistakes of the past, not using them as a guidebook cityandstateny.com/opinion/2023/0…
Top 3 reasons I am excited about the launch of LPE NYC: 1. I live in new york and know first hand the incredible group of humans already doing this work across the city and at CUNY, NYU, Brooklyn, Columbia, Fordham, Cardozo, & New York. I'm excited this will bring them together!
📢 Attention NEW YORKERS!📢 Please save the date for the official launch of... 🍾🌉🤩 ***LPE NYC*** 🤩🌉🍾 A new *citywide* network of students, profs, lawyers, organizers, & other people fighting for a better future! 2/16 - 6PM @ NYU. See you there! lpeproject.org/lpe-nyc/
"The @NYSenDems conference rose to prominence (and a historic supermajority) as an antidote to old-style, backroom Albany politics, and our efforts to reshape the system were--and are--vigorously opposed by Republicans and establishment Democrats alike..." cityandstateny.com/opinion/2023/0…
Fantastic oped by @SenGianaris on the right way to understand the fight over LaSalle’s nomination in @CityAndStateNY. cityandstateny.com/opinion/2023/0…
On what would have been the 50th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, we’re reminded that progress can move backward. And that means we’ve got to recommit to doing our part to protect and expand reproductive rights for families today — and for generations to come.
Could not be prouder of this powerful statement from @AndreaSCousins. The separation of powers is inherent to a healthy democracy. That means a strong legislature upholding its constitutional responsibilities in service of the people — not the Governor.
We agree with Majority Leader @AndreaSCousins that the separation of powers in state government is critical and cannot be undermined. The Governor must put forth a new Chief Judge nominee with a strong record of defending the rights and liberties of everyday New Yorkers.

My statement on today's Judiciary Committee hearing, and the qualities I feel we need in our next Chief Judge:
📰: "We thank the Senate for rejecting this nomination. We call on Gov. Hochul, as we have for months, to put forward a nominee for chief judge who will stand up for the rights of marginalized NYers + lead #TheCourtNYDeserves." - @CCA_NY's @peter_f_martin spectrumlocalnews.com/nys/central-ny…
We want to thank all the Senators who took principled, courageous stands on this nomination: On the Judiciary Committee: @bradhoylman @jessicaramos @ShelleyBMayer @LiuNewYork @tobystavisky @zellnor4ny @SenSeanRyan @JamesSkoufis @agounardes @NeilBreslin46

Much appreciation for Senate Dems on Judiciary who stood with NY workers and voted #NoOnLaSalle today: @bradhoylman @JessicaRamos @LiuNewYork @Sen_Gounardes @tobystavisky @ShelleyBMayer @SenatorMyrie @NeilBreslin46 @SenSeanRyan @JamesSkoufis Thank you!
@MMViverito @NYSenate In almost all of these examples, a new trial is ordered giving the prosecutor a second chance at obtaining a conviction. When defendants lose, they lose everything with finality, except for a narrow right to appeal. Legal perspective- a judicial record of a Chief Judge matters!

None of the colleges that recently stopped using the legacy preference ended early decision as well outside of @virginia_tech. But early decision undercuts merit and diversity as well AND is used by way more upper crust families than the legacy preference. masslive.com/opinion/2023/0…
The true progressive position on elite college admissions is to ban the legacy preference and its brethren, change colleges’ underlying financial incentives & hold them accountable for results. Colleges are businesses. Treat them like it. @GeorgetownCEW co.chalkbeat.org/2023/8/25/2384…
@BarbMcQuade It’s a balancing act depending on the prof.
“Elite schools in MA & elsewhere are being profoundly hypocritical by decrying the loss of race-conscious affirmative action while persisting with…policies that heavily advantage generationally wealthy & white applicants,” State Rep. Simon Cataldo said. bostonglobe.com/2023/07/01/met…

PRESS STATEMENT: The Court New York Deserves Celebrates the Nomination of Hon. Rowan D. Wilson for Chief Judge
What a moment!!
Judge Rowan Wilson—a leading progressive judge who commands widespread respect—is the new nominee for Chief Judge. Today's announcement is the pinnacle so far of our nine-month campaign for #TheCourtNYDeserves. How did we get here? 🧵
One year ago today, I assumed the helm of LDF in a line of extraordinary predecessors. I'm as humbled & honored now as I was nearly 30 yrs ago when I became an LDF extern determined to serve Black communities & the ideals of justice, freedom, equity, dignity & democracy for all.
Since 2014, @JNelsonLDF has stewarded some of LDF’s most pivotal developments. Now, as LDF's President and Director-Counsel, her transformative leadership will undoubtedly continue pushing the fight for racial justice forward. naacpldf.org/introducing-ja…

@narosenblum I always found them to provide a useful lesson in how wildly out of touch judges are with the real world. They would say things that were straight up bananas, with no sense of how privileged and insulated they are.
