@AlexisStokesDS His father had told him about a time she visited, to convince him that she wasn't his mother, but Daniel doesn't really remember it much. He should say something nice. She IS giving him a gift. "Well, I'm glad you're here now." He pauses, realizing that he might mean it. 2/2
@AlexisStokesDS Daniel, so often keen on causing trouble, can tell he's hit a nerve. He didn't really mean to this time. He isn't sure what she means about Aunt Hannah. She at least comes to the house sometimes, while he can't remember Alexis ever being here. 1/2
@AlexisStokesDS Even if she is just his aunt, that means she's his mother's sister. A twin. Doesn't that make her special somehow? "When you first arrived...it's not that I don't want you here. I just... Why didn't Mother ever talk about you?" 2/2
@AlexisStokesDS Daniel uncomfortably enters the room. A pang of conscience perhaps. She's trying so hard to be nice to him. He'd been so withdrawn towards her, avoiding her whenever possible. What if she is his mother and he's wasted so much time when he could have been with her? 1/2
@AlexisStokesDS He frowns. Maybe he did dream the whole thing. "No, Aunt Alexis." Daniel looks up at her realizing that she's stopped. "It's just that...you've been spending so much time away from the house." He says the first thing that comes to mind, hoping to cover up his real reason.
@AlexisStokesDS But what if he's wrong, and she really is his mother's sister? He couldn't betray their secret. "Collinwood isn't always a safe place, is it...Aunt Alexis?" Daniel asks carefully as they walk through the twisting hallways of the great house towards her room. 2/2
@AlexisStokesDS Is this what his mother had meant about not coming back yet? That they have to pretend she's someone else because she is in danger? He nods slowly. Daniel follows her out of the room, his fingertips trailing along the wallpaper. 1/2
@AlexisStokesDS When she looked at anyone else her eyes were like a grey tempest, but when she looked at him they were like a calm, inviting sea. "I...I don't know." Nothing has been right since Mother left. But she would be back. She promised! Or is she already here? 2/2
@AlexisStokesDS He winces at her touch. He suddenly had a strange fear that her hand would go right through him. But it doesn't. It's solid...real. Daniel dares to glance up into her eyes again. They seem soft. Mother looked at him like that. 1/2
@AlexisStokesDS The way Alexis looks at him... He's frightened of her again, even if he doesn't want to admit it. Daniel looks down at the ground, feeling like a trapped animal. 3/3
@AlexisStokesDS Daniel stands there stiffly, hoping she won't ask him why he's there. Seeing his aunt reminds him of seeing his mother last night. Or maybe he did. The whole thing feels like a dream, but Mother could always be like that. 2/3
@AngeliqueColPT "Okay. Goodnight, Mother." Daniel wants more than anything to stay awake, but somehow finds his eyes closing again. Is it just a dream? He can't fall asleep now! Then he'll never know. But it's no use. His eyes close in sleep, and Daniel isn't aware of anything more.
Fast asleep, Daniel shivers. He dreams that he is standing on the edge of a parapice...Widow's Hill maybe. He is screaming his mother's name over and over again into the darkness and the shadows. Sometimes he thinks he hears her voice over the roar of the waves. 1/2
@AngeliqueColPT He doesn't want to let her go, but he obeys and lays down again. For all Daniel's ideas of being grown up, he holds her hand tightly like he's still a small child. "Yes, I remember. As long as you're coming back... That's all I need to know."
@AngeliqueColPT Daniel relaxes slightly. She IS coming back, then. "Okay. It's just like when you go traveling, right? And you always come back soon?"
@AngeliqueColPT Daniel grips her even tighter. What if this IS just a dream? Then he will wake up and be alone again! "You aren't going to leave again, are you Mother?"
@AngeliqueColPT "I don't understand. They said you were dead, but I knew that wasn't true. I just knew it!" There has always been a feeling deep in his gut. Something isn't right about the story that they told him about her just suddenly passing away.
@AngeliqueColPT He stares, unsure what to believe. He must be still asleep. But it doesn't matter. She's here. Daniel sits up and puts his arms around her. He feels her stroke his hair just as she used to. "Mother, why did you go away?"
@AngeliqueColPT "Mother?" How often has he dreamt that she was sitting on the edge of his bed as she did when he was little. There, waiting to comfort him when he awoke from bad dreams. Daniel stares at her form there on the bed beside him. Is he still dreaming?
