April 1863. Civil War. This is Pvt. Henry Lye, Company G, 1st United States Sharpshooters — one of Berdan’s famous marksmen. He was a 23-year-old English immigrant living in Wisconsin when he enlisted in 1861. He was a skilled rifleman and became part of a unit known for its green uniforms and deadly accuracy with the Sharps Model 1859 rifle. This photograph was taken in April 1863, shortly before the Battle of Chancellorsville. The article notes that this was Henry after nearly two years of war — visibly changed from the younger, more carefree man seen in his earlier portraits. He had already survived.... Yorktown Gaines’ Mill. Glendale. Malvern Hill. Second Bull Run. Shepherdstown. And countless skirmishes in between. By then, the war had clearly changed him. In one of his letters to his sweetheart, Almira “Myra” Sherrer, Henry wrote that he no longer wanted to take a man’s life if he could avoid it. He said he would do his duty in battle, but would never shoot a man if taking him prisoner was possible. That matters. Because he was a sharpshooter. His job was literally to kill accurately from distance. Yet after enough fighting, he had begun wrestling with what that actually meant. Two months after this photograph, Henry marched north with the Army of the Potomac toward Pennsylvania. On June 30, 1863, he wrote Myra one final letter near the Pennsylvania line. His regiment had marched 145 miles in six days. He stopped writing when the bugle called the men back into formation. They were heading toward Gettysburg. On July 2, Henry was shot west of the Emmitsburg Road. A fellow soldier, Sgt. Willard Isham, was standing only a few paces away and caught him as he fell. Henry was carried from the line. He died on the morning of July 4, 1863. He is buried today at Gettysburg National Cemetery. That is what makes this photograph hit. We are not looking at “a Civil War soldier.” We are looking at Henry. A man in love. A man tired of war. A man hoping to go home. A man who had no idea that within three months, Gettysburg would become the final chapter of his life
