A school without a solid, consistent curriculum from year-to-year is a rudderless educational ship.

Small group should be based in text, but not every student is ready for connected text or chapter books. Some need decodable text, or grade level fluency passages to build the skills necessary for connected text.

Hear it, say it, read it, write it! If you want students to build their sight word reading base, then they need to do these 4 things with as many words AND as many times as possible.

Lucky enough to get to coach some of the teachers who I am facilitating LETRS for. All too often we give teachers great info like from LETRS, but we never support their classroom implementation. Teachers need BOTH!

I have been reading about the ire over not reading whole books. Tier1 texts should be quality stories and books meant to be read and re-read for quality comp. Instruction. Small group is where they need more trade books and chapter books to practice applying the skill from Tier1.

Three years ago I became employed at a school that was moving to SoR. They were the oddball in a district of BL. My “crazy” ideas were met with eye rolls and humphs of disagreement among some districts leaders. This week I was invited back to help implement those “crazy” ideas

Tier 2 (small group reading) should be text based. From words and sentences for our earliest K to decodables, fluency passages, grade level connected text, and chapter books. If it is not your students will not make the gains they are capable of making. #SoR
