Nicaea reconstruction is online at nicaea.byzantium1200.com/index.html
Notre crise "grecque" a commencé.
He survived years of war against the Ottoman Empire and became one of Wallachia's most powerful rulers. But after losing his throne, he was handed over to his enemies, who turned his execution into a gruesome warning for every prince in the Balkans. Constantin Brâncoveanu ruled Wallachia from 1688 to 1714, navigating the dangerous politics between the Ottoman Empire, the Habsburg monarchy, and Russian Empire. A skilled diplomat and generous patron of culture, he strengthened monasteries, sponsored schools, and accumulated immense wealth. For more than twenty-five years, he successfully balanced the ambitions of Europe's greatest powers. Eventually, suspicion caught up with him. Ottoman officials accused Brâncoveanu of secretly negotiating with both Austria and Russia while remaining an Ottoman vassal. Whether he truly intended to abandon Ottoman rule remains debated, but Ahmed III no longer trusted him. In 1714, the prince was arrested along with his wife, four sons, and his trusted adviser Ianache Văcărescu. The entire family was transported in chains to Constantinople. For months they were imprisoned, interrogated, and pressured to surrender their fortune and embrace Islam. According to contemporary accounts, Brâncoveanu refused. On August 15, 1714—his sixtieth birthday—the prisoners were brought before a large crowd outside the imperial palace. The Ottoman authorities presented the prince and his sons with a final choice: convert to Islam and live, or remain Christians and die. Brâncoveanu reportedly urged his sons to remain steadfast. One by one, the executioner beheaded his four sons before their father's eyes. Finally, Constantin Brâncoveanu himself knelt before the executioner. A single stroke ended the life of the prince who had ruled Wallachia for a quarter of a century. Their bodies were thrown into the Bosporus before later being recovered by Christian sympathizers for burial. The executions shocked Europe. Rather than being remembered as traitors, Brâncoveanu and his sons became enduring symbols of faith and sacrifice. In 1992, the Romanian Orthodox Church formally canonized Constantin Brâncoveanu, his four sons, and Ianache Văcărescu as martyrs. The irony is unforgettable. For decades, Brâncoveanu survived by carefully balancing rival empires through diplomacy instead of war. In the end, it was not a battlefield defeat that destroyed him—but the suspicion that he had become too independent to be trusted. History remembers Constantin Brâncoveanu not merely as the Prince of Wallachia—but as the ruler who watched his sons die before facing the executioner's sword himself. #archaeohistories

The Basileus is back!! Extremely rarely - or not published at all, I think depictions of Greek prophecies from the 16th century! The Basileus before and during his victorious entrance back to Heptalophos (Seven-Hills) City, the usual adjective for Constantinople, especially in Greek prophetic texts. The below striking works are among the illuminations produced by the great Cretan painter Georgios Klontzas, who was born less than eight decades after the Fall of the City. More on Klontzas and the prophetic texts soon...
Nikolaos Maurokordatos (1670 – 1730) was a great figure of early modern Hellenism, known for his long tenure as Prince (Voivode) of Wallachia and Moldavia where among other he reinforced the Greek cultural influence in the principalities, introducing Byzantine court models and language, establishing monasteries such as the renowned Văcăreşti and the Church of Stavropoleos. But he was not only that. He excelled as a writer, with some of his works being the 'Peri kathekonton', the novel 'Philotheou Parerga', the essay against tobacco 'Peri Nikotianes' etc. We have seen it everywhere we are looking at...either we are talking about a half-illiterate Greek monk, a teacher in Ioannina, or a Phanariot Prince in Moldowallachia, the agony of the Greeks was the same. The deeply rooted belief of a glorious past and an endangering present. The vision of preserving Greek paideia and its subsequent spread, the dream of an educated Greek youth that will fulfill the Genos' destiny. This is the Greek ideology, unchanged for centuries, and long before the commonly called Rise of Nationalisms in the 19th century. Below some thoughts by the Prince: "Χειροῦνται δ’ Ἑλλήνων γένη, μεγάλαις εὐκλείαις αἰῶνα τὸν πάλαι περιβαλόντα, οἷς καὶ μέχρι τοῦδε ἐναπέμεινεν ἴχνη οὐ πάμπαν ἐξίτηλα ἀρχαίας μεγαλοψυχίας καὶ ἀγχινόιας· ... ... "The races of the Greeks are in decline, though they once surrounded their era with great glories, and even to this day, traces of their ancient greatness of spirit and sharpness of mind have not entirely faded." "Yet Greece has not been entirely abandoned by wise men and books; it has preserved, and continues to preserve, remnants of its ancient grandeur. Even in this present extremity of time, some, with tireless diligence, by night and day, unfold the works of the Greeks, as well as those composed in the tongues of the Latins, Arabs, Persians, Italians, and French."
The Order of the Dragon was a monarchical chivalric order from the Holy Roman Empire. It was charged to defend the cross and fight the enemies of Christianity, primarily the Ottoman Empire. Here is the story of these Imperial Knights and their order, a thread.🧵

The Fall of Constantinople in 1453 depicted in frescoes on the exterior of the Bucovina/ Northern Moldavia painted churches: from above down- Moldovita (1530s), Arbore (1500s), Humor (1530s). These are some of the most important extant images of that historic watershed moment.

It’s amazing to me that the Roman Empire survived in the post-1204 geopolitical situation. It was not a given that the Empire could survive the fracturing which occurred. Theodore Laskaris did great to unify Western Asia Minor into a viable last bastion of Roman imperial rule. Laskaris had to transform himself “from an Anatolian lord to a rebuilder of the Byzantine state.” He secured the support of the Anatolian elites, both in major cities and the large land owners. He convinced them he would fight for their interests. As Emperor he bestowed titles upon them to secure their support, and recognized their rights to hold their lands and wealth. The problems were plentiful, mainly that there were now rival Latin states looking to crush him, Seljuk Turks sensing weakness, and other Romans who wanted to carve out their own realms. There were others who dreamed of putting the Empire back in order. There was of course the Despotate of Epirus, a distant but serious competitor, and Trebizond which had rebelled before Constantinople fell. Perhaps more immediate and less popularly known concerns were the holdings of Theodore Mangaphas and Sabbas Asidenos. They held lands in western Anatolia, on the upper map corresponding roughly to what is labeled the “Empire of Philadelphia” and Phrygia. Laskaris convinced them he could protect them from the Latins and incorporated them back in the Empire. This was a major accomplishment, Nicaea would have struggled to militarily force them to join them. “Mangaphas surrendered his lordship over Philadelphia peacefully, while his family remained well-off proprietors in the city and its environs. Asidenos’ lordship was absorbed before April 1214 through a marriage alliance that made him an in-law of the elder Theodore Laskaris. Asidenos was granted the court title of sebastokrator in a document dated March 24, 1216...Theodore kept inviting prominent men of the 12th century elite to help him in the re-establishment of the imperial government. In return he promised religious political and religious freedom from the Latins.” Theodore Laskaris welcomed Roman refugees and encouraged Balkan elites from families such as the Palaiologoi and Kantakouzenoi to come to his realm. Even the Patriarchate eventually relocated to Nicaea. The “generals and civil officials who relocated to Asia Minor brought much needed expertise” from the former administration of Constantinople to a small Roman state in Anatolia surrounded by danger. Some basiliken (imperial) advice on how we should debate, by Manuel II Palaiologos: - Do not interrupt one who has begun speaking. #greekparliament - Do not accuse someone for their words. - Do not repeat things already said by the others, but add or subtract from these words. - Do not speak about consequences before the heart of the actual matter has been agreed upon. - Do not engage in conversations, but rather state plainly what you think. - Do not repeat what has been confirmed. - Do not offer another piece of advice before the advice being offered at the moment is finished.
