If I could reset one aspect of my religious tribe, it would be to put orthopraxy before orthodoxy. We're built to form beliefs and doctrines out of what we experience with God...instead of allowing our beliefs to dictate what God is allowed to do among us. Tell me I'm wrong!

Maybe I need a little more excitement in my life. When I merge to the side of the road to let an ambulance go by...sometimes...I do a fist pump assuming the paramedics and I just joined forces to save lives.

I've seen a lot of people leave their church because it doesn't match their political party. I've rarely seen anyone leave their political party because it doesn't match their church. I wonder why.

A third substantive shift in my approach to preaching in the last 10 years: The act of listening in sermon prep includes more than listening to scripture. It must also mean listening to God's voice speaking through the people in my world...especially the wounded ones.

The two most significant changes in my preaching over the last ten years: 1) My task is to preach God, not the scriptures. The scriptures only serve that task. 2) Preaching God as a community of love...not an isolated, lonely being.
