I’m genuinely torn about whether the internet & social media is a net positive or negative right now. On one hand, it’s important that people who have been propagandised for years into believing that Israel/Palestine conflict is a simple issue of “good guys” vs “bad guys” can finally see the horrors that such mindsets create, such as the events of this weekend, and the likely further atrocities that will result. On the other hand, making the gruesome reality of war crimes available 24/7 in high resolution to any and every person with a phone - not to mention all the videos of people celebrating them - is a guaranteed way to accelerate and deepen divisions even further, and generally incite widespread madness across the globe, especially in people who have been sheltered from the reality of it for so long. Hatred and tribalism are arguably the most potent mindviruses on earth, and the internet is the ultimate medium for spreading them from brain to brain. And we’re already seeing pockets of the same conflict stir up thousands of miles away from its origin. If that continues, it could be a fast track to hell. So it’s really unclear to me what’s actually best for humanity right now. Sunlight is almost always the best disinfectant… unless the virus adapts and learns to feed on it, which I suspect this one has.
