97) Days Like These by Brian Bilston. Was fortunate enough to see him live, and bought this off the back of it. Inevitably, with 365 poems, it’s a bit hit and miss, but thankfully the former vastly outnumbers the latter.

93 The Safekeep by Yale van der Wouden. A worthy Booker nominee, the shadow of war hangs heavy until a surprise twist two thirds of the way through. Deftly written, and even more carefully presented.

92) The Five, by Hallie Rubenfold. Humanises the victims of Jack the Ripper in a way that hasn’t often been seen elsewhere. In fact, the killer is barely mentioned in the book itself, such is its determination to provide agency.

91) Shakespeare: The Man Who Pays the Rent, by Judi Dench. A typically witty look back at all her various on-stage portrayals of the Bard’s work, along with her own thoughts on why he endures. A nice surprise, and a must for any Shakespeare fan.

90) Lula Dean’s Little Library of Banned Books by Krysten Miller. A timely page turner about a small town that loses its mind before gradually rediscovering it, this may seem extreme at times, but could also serve as a warning.

89) Held by Anne Michaels. A collection of narratives held together by a single, delicate thread. Softly spoken, but no less felt in its impact. Would have been my choice for the Booker, personally.

88) Orbital by Samantha Harvey. A day in the life of astronauts on a space station, this is incredibly intriguing in its mundanity - which should be an oxymoron, but somehow isn’t. Nice brisk read, and well worth doing so.

87) Butter by Asako Yuzuki. Almost lives up to the hype, but not quite. An excellent first half is nearly derailed by an underwhelming twist, before stuttering to a close. Well-drawn characters and some memorable lines, but doesn’t quite stick the landing.

86) The Theory of Everything Else by Dan Schreiber. Another one for Fish enthusiasts, this is full of funny and downright bizarre stories straight out of the Strange But True mould. Incredibly fun to read.

85) Burning the Books by Richard Ovenden. The subject matter isn’t always adhered to - sometimes it’s a case of cities getting sacked, and libraries happening to get caught in the crossfire - but there’s still a lot to enjoy.
