i understand people busy doing NLP research don't feel the urge to be involved in the orgnizational aspects, i am guilty too. but we really took a wrong turn getting to a state where the naacl chair and future acl president together have ~25 papers in major nlp venues.
@yoavgo I wonder how much of it has to do with the fact that many of the most productive researchers moving to industry where incentives are not necessarily aligned with service to the field?
@tallinzen i think the incentives are not well aligned also if you dont move to industry
@tallinzen @yoavgo I agree with this diagnosis of the problem, though the causal arrow doesn't necessarily go in the direction implied here. For me, it was the already-existing broken incentives and my inability to fix them that played a big part in pushing me away from academic life.
