The number of Black American players in Major League Baseball has plummeted to just 6%, offering a warning about what can happen when institutions de-emphasize diversity. More on our #ReidOutBlog: trib.al/zfSzdF7
@thereidout What percentage of the population are African American men? About 6%? People are so used to African Americans being overrepresented in the NFL and NBA they get confused about their percentage in the general population.
@thereidout Or what happens when institutions emphasize ability and qualifications over race. It’s ok to be different.
@thereidout If you don’t think MLB is incredibly diverse, you don’t follow baseball.
@thereidout When 'diversity' is de-emphasized in hiring, merit prevails. The NBA doesn't try to be representative of US demographics either 😂
@thereidout MLB has actually never been more diverse, unless you don’t count Latin Americans as people? Do you not?
98% of professional baseball players spend years of grueling conditions in the minor league earning mere hundreds of dollars per week to little fanfare. There’s little incentive to try to become a pro baseball player when other sports have much better conditions, pay and opportunity for career advancement. Your argument is completely flawed unless your proposition is wanting gifted black male athletes to make no money while having limited chance at success. Of course, you have no idea how baseball works - so you’re simply making it solely about racial quotas.
@thereidout You can emphasize these nuts.
