William Hobson, 12, dreams of becoming a pilot. Delta welcomed him as an honorary captain aboard its DREAM Flight, crewed entirely by Black aviation professionals. Our children deserve to see themselves in the careers they dream of pursuing. Representation matters.

On September 23, 2009, Muammar Gaddafi walked into the UN General Assembly in New York for his first — and ultimately his last — appearance at the UN podium. He spoke for approximately 1 hour and 36 minutes, delivering one of the most extraordinary speeches in the history of the General Assembly. He was speaking not only for Libya, but also on behalf of the African Union and the African people. Gaddafi's central target was the UN Security Council and the veto power of its five permanent members. He argued that the UN Charter's principle of sovereign equality was fundamentally contradicted by a system in which five countries could veto decisions affecting the rest of the world. He questioned why the countries that created the UN should retain privileges that allow them to determine the fate of nations that were not even represented when the organization was founded. He pointed to the Charter's prohibition on aggression and interference in the affairs of sovereign states and contrasted those principles with what he described as decades of wars, interventions and sanctions by the US and other veto members. He attacked the Security Council as a system of “security feudalism,” arguing that it did not provide genuine security to the world but allowed major powers to impose sanctions and military force according to their own interests. He rejected the idea that Security Council resolutions should automatically be obeyed when, in his view, the Council itself violated the principles of the Charter. Then he turned to Africa. Gaddafi argued that Africa deserved a permanent seat on the Security Council because of the continent's historical suffering and exclusion from global decision-making. He went further, calling for compensation for Africa over the wealth and resources extracted during colonial rule — estimating the historical debt at approximately $77.7 trillion — and argued that colonization itself should be criminalized. He also criticized the location of the UN headquarters in New York, arguing that the annual General Assembly should rotate between different regions of the world rather than remaining permanently in the United States. Then he trained his guns on the international response to Palestine, criticizing Israel over settlements, Palestinian prisoners, refugees and the absence of a Palestinian state. He advocated a system in which Muslims, Christians and Jews could live with equal rights in a single state. At one point, Gaddafi held up a copy of the UN Charter and dramatically tore it apart. The symbolism was unmistakable. He was arguing that the international system claimed to be built on sovereign equality while maintaining a hierarchy in which a handful of powerful states possessed extraordinary privileges. On that day, on that podium, Gaddafi made countless enemies. The UN itself recorded the speech as lasting about 1 hour and 36 minutes; UN footage describes it as Gaddafi's first and last appearance at the General Assembly podium. Then, just two years later, in 2011, Libya conveniently descended into chaos. The West funded and backed an uprising against Gaddafi, while the very Security Council he had condemned authorized military action against Libya. NATO then launched a massive bombing campaign. NATO warplanes struck Libyan targets from the air for months. Eventually, NATO aircraft struck Gaddafi's convoy as he was fleeing Sirte. Gaddafi was captured alive by Western-backed rebel fighters. What followed was horrific. He was beaten, tortured and ultimately killed. His son Mu'tassim Gaddafi was also captured and killed. The UN justified the intervention as an effort to "protect civilians". But Libya was left devastated — to date. Libyans have continued to live with the consequences of that "intervention" for more than a decade. Gaddafi was killed in October 2011. But the questions he raised at the UN in September 2009 did not die with him.

Montgomery's bus boycott ran for 381 days. It needed cars, gas, insurance and drivers — and money that could not be traced to anyone who could be fired for giving it. A cook solved that problem with pound cake. Georgia Gilmore. She had testified in court about being thrown off a bus, and lost her job for it. Dr. King helped her set up a kitchen in her own house. Then she organized women across Montgomery into a fundraising operation she deliberately named the Club From Nowhere — so that when the money arrived at mass meetings, nobody could be identified, targeted, or sacked. They sold sweet potato pies, fried fish and pound cake at beauty shops and on street corners, week after week, for over a year. Her kitchen fed the movement and funded the carpools. King ate at her table. Kennedy ate at her table. The boycott is remembered as speeches and lawsuits. It ran on pie money from women nobody was writing down. Georgia Gilmore’s story is one of the many stories in black history that is never spoken about. Black history is not only about the famous names. It’s also about the people whose courage, sacrifice, and stories were nearly forgotten.

On the morning of September 11, 2001, LeRoy Wilton Homer Jr. reported for work like he had countless times before. He was a pilot. A husband. A son. A Black man who had earned his place in a cockpit that had never been designed with him in mind. When United Flight 93 was hijacked, LeRoy didn’t disappear into fear. From inside the plane, a calm but urgent voice reached the ground. He relayed what was happening. He fought for time. He fought for lives. And when passengers rose up against terror, he was already standing in resistance. The plane never reached its intended target. It crashed into a field in Pennsylvania instead—because the people onboard, including the pilots, refused to surrender quietly. Because courage lived in that cabin. LeRoy Wilton Homer Jr. died that day at just 36 years old. His name is rarely spoken when 9/11 is remembered. His face is often missing from the narratives. And yet, his sacrifice is inseparable from the lives he helped save. Even in a moment of national mourning, his story reminds us of a painful truth: Black heroism is too often overlooked, even when it costs everything. But history does not forget forever. LeRoy Homer was a Black pilot who faced terror with resolve, who helped prevent even greater loss, and who gave his life in the fight. He deserves to be remembered—not as a footnote, but as a hero.

@SonAndPop RIP.

The history books don't talk nearly enough about LeRoy Wilton Homer Jr. As the co-pilot of United Flight 93 on 9/11, he fought alongside the crew and passengers to prevent the hijacked plane from hitting its target, saving countless lives on the ground. A true American hero who deserves to be a household name.

Our Future 💪🏿

Eleven years ago today, nine Black worshippers were murdered during Bible study at Mother Emanuel A.M.E. Church in Charleston. Rev. Clementa C. Pinckney. Cynthia Hurd. Susie Jackson. Ethel Lance. Rev. Depayne Middleton-Doctor. Tywanza Sanders. Rev. Daniel Simmons Sr. Rev. Sharonda Coleman-Singleton. Myra Thompson. We say their names and remember the sacredness of their lives. This was not only a mass shooting. It was a heinous act of white supremacy carried out in a house of worship. We must tell the truth about that hatred, grieve what it stole, and remain committed to dismantling the violence of racism in every form. #MotherEmanuel #SayTheirNames

This teacher should be immediately fired. Today at Barrington Middle School (Hillsborough County Public School System) Florida, This art teacher Mrs. KAREN SAVAGE took the time to wrap a charger cord around a Black baby doll’s neck and hang it directly over the classroom television for the entire room to see. In the video you can see the doll swinging and when the children called out this blatant hate and asked why she hung that doll by its neck, she laughed it off. Her excuse to our kids was that she did it “to get their attention.! This is NOT a classroom management tool. This is straight up hate!
