I feel like the people criticizing this letter have not really taken the time to read it Tao is not saying that AI should not be used for math In fact, I think that he is an advocate for using AI to support math research What he is saying is that there is a problem with the big AI companies racing to check off as true or false big famous problems because the approach they are taking is not advancing human understanding The goal of math is not to simply check off as true or false a list of things, but rather to increase human understanding of human thought And right now, while I guess it’s sort of interesting to know the answers to these problems, human understanding is not really being advanced and the things that were valuable about math in the first place are getting lost This is a very thoughtful point and it is not simply “gatekeeping” or whatever

@G6A52860052 @Math_files There is no such thing as a degree Kelvin, it is simply a Kelvin e.g. 273,15K=0°C (also as the image above)

For the record. This was not unanimous. I was muted on the call and not allowed to speak or voice my opposition to this move. Also for the record, this was not on the agenda. This was not consensus. This is censorship.

Let’s start with the most obvious bullshit. 1. The chart quietly drops the UK Post-Brexit, EU GDP mechanically falls because the UK is removed. That alone knocks ~15% off EU nominal GDP with zero economic collapse involved. ec.europa.eu/eurostat/web/n… 2. It uses nominal GDP at market exchange rates That line is dominated by currency movements, not real economic decline. When the euro weakens against the dollar, the EU’s GDP shrinks on paper even if Europeans are producing the same amount of goods and services. IMF explicitly warns about this. If you switch to PPP-adjusted GDP, the “collapse” largely disappears. 3. The denominator exploded (China, India, EMs) “Share of world GDP” is a relative metric. China went from ~2% of global GDP in 1990 to ~18% today. India, ASEAN, others surged. Even if Europe had grown steadily, its share would still fall. That is arithmetic, not EU failure. 4. The US artificially inflates nominal GDP US GDP is boosted by: ⇢ Massive healthcare prices ⇢ Student debt financing ⇢ Credit-card consumption ⇢ Financial-sector rents These inflate nominal GDP, not living standards. 5. Real outcomes contradict the narrative If the EU were “declining” in reality, you’d see it in: ⇢ Productivity collapse ⇢ Median incomes ⇢ Life expectancy ⇢ Poverty rates You don’t.
