On radically different incomes life in America can be surprisingly similar. Imagine three single mothers, each raising a ten-year-old boy. One is a public-school teacher in Tampa earning $50,000 a year. Another is a lawyer in Atlanta earning $200,000. The third is a venture-capital partner in Chicago earning $1 million. On paper, they inhabit three different Americas. One earns twenty times more than another. One is 25th percentile im wealth the other 84th the last one top 1%. They describe inequality in the USA. Now look at their sons. All three wake up with electricity, running water, refrigeration, heating and air conditioning. They eat plenty of food, ride in safe modern cars, wear sneakers, watch YouTube, play the same video games, use similar phones and tablets and have access to vaccines, antibiotics, dentists and modern medicine. One goes to public school, another to private school, the third perhaps to an elite private school. One flies economy once a year, another travels frequently, the third may occasionally fly private. Their houses, neighborhoods and vacations are different. But their actual daily lives are far less different than their mothers’ incomes suggest. The socialist argument has always been about equality of outcomes. Well, look around. In much of ordinary material life, capitalism has already produced something remarkably close to it. The millionaire’s refrigerator does not keep milk twenty times fresher. Her son’s iPhone does not make YouTube twenty times more entertaining. He cannot eat twenty breakfasts, sleep twenty hours at once or enjoy a video game twenty times more because his mother earns twenty times as much. For several hours every day, these three boys may be doing almost exactly the same thing. This would have been unimaginable two centuries ago. The child of a rich family and the child of a laborer often lived in genuinely different physical worlds. One had plentiful food, warmth, books, servants, doctors and transportation. The other might lack adequate calories or clean water. Industrial capitalism destroyed much of that inequality by doing something socialism never managed very well: making formerly scarce things cheap enough for almost everyone. Cars, refrigerators, televisions, air conditioning, computers and smartphones began as luxuries and became mass-market goods. The entrepreneur became rich precisely by making what the rich had available to everybody else. And that may explain one of the great ironies of the new American enthusiasm for socialism. Capitalism’s victories are now so complete that nobody notices them. Clean water is not considered wealth. Neither is electricity. Nor refrigeration. Nor an air-conditioned bedroom, instant global communication, unlimited music, thousands of films or a computer in your pocket more powerful than anything that existed when many of today’s billionaires were children. Those things have become invisible because almost everyone has them. What remains visible are the inequalities capitalism has not eliminated: the mansion, the private school, the beachfront house, the prestigious university, the best neighborhood. But if the political demand is that ordinary people should be able to enjoy many of the same basic experiences as the rich, something extraordinary has already happened. Put these families on a chart and the inequality looks enormous. Put their ten-year-old boys on three sofas at eight o’clock at night, eating pizza in sweatpants and staring at nearly identical screens, and the difference becomes surprisingly hard to see. Equality of income? Obviously not. Equality of many of the outcomes that actually fill a human day? Far more than we admit.

The camera zoomed in on the survivors. Image hanging out a window, 100 stories off the ground w/a fire behind u. I yelled 2 my husband “Can’t a helicopter w/ a basket get them!!” He said a helicopter couldn’t get close enough. “What then, there’s got to be another way!” Al Qaeda didn’t just murder these people, Americans trying to do their jobs, terrorists tortured them to death. In the survivors’ last 30 mins on earth they had to CHOOSE whether to die by fire, or jump 100 stories to their death. Which is the quickest death? When @ZohranKMamdani says “3,000, died & I mourn all the people who died in wars afterward,” I’m infuriated. These Americans didn’t just “die,” they were tortured to death. & there would have been “no wars after” if not 4 Al Qaeda’s actions. I’m still mad Zohran choose #RamziKassem (lawyer of the WTC plotter!) as city’s top legal advisor. So disrespectful. @NYCCouncil @NYDSA @MicahLasher @RitchieTorres @DarializaforNY @claireforny @RepJeffries @RepTenney @lawler4ny @Grace4NY

The jury foreperson is beside herself. She told the holdout to: -read the room -be normal for once -just be a decent human being She then called him an incel and said he would never get laid again in this town. And nevertheless, he persisted.

Is there any reason why NFL players should be able to return to play college football? The Get Up crew weighs in 👀

Opinion: I'm a mom, too. Millions of women give birth, endure exhaustion and pain, juggle the demands of raising multiple kids and don't kill their children. usatoday.com/story/opinion/…

This is the ex-husband of Susan Smith. In 1994, she drowned their two young boys In 2024, he spoke at her parole: "I am their father. She has never expressed any remorse. She made a choice. They say it was 30 years, but that's only 15 per child to me. It's not enough"

Skip Bertman was one of my favorite people I got to cover. And his 2000 team was one of my favorite to cover. What I loved most about Skip was his sense of humor. When @LSUbaseball played in an NCAA regional in Tuscaloosa, Skip told us reporters, “if you need anything we will be staying at the La Quinta, which as you may know, in Spanish, means ‘next to Denny’s.’” Another time, the Tigers were starting the season with a Saturday doubleheader at Alex Box stadium instead of a Friday night game to begin a series. Skip explained that Friday was his wedding anniversary, so he had a choice of ticking off either 8,000 rabid LSU fans, or one wife. He said the choice was easy. Skip built a powerhouse program, and then a powerhouse athletic department. His impact will endure. RIP 🙏🏾

A quick Larry Fitzgerald story. When John McCain passed away in 2018 Larry was asked to speak at the service. McCain and Fitzgerald developed a unique friendship that dated back to 2006. They had a tremendous amount of respect for one another. Larry wanted that moment to be perfect. He considered it a privilege to have the opportunity to honor a man he held in the highest regard. So Fitz used the famous work ethic he was known for as a player on that speech. He used the same attention to detail that got him to Canton today. Back in 2018 it was an early morning at the Cardinals practice facility and I was doing hits for NFL Network. I was the only person in the media workroom. Larry walked into the room in a suit, he said hello, and he went into a back room. He didn’t come back out for hours. Later that day I asked around about what Larry was doing. I was told he was practicing. He was wearing the suit he was going to wear at the service. He was standing at a podium in that room to simulate the setting for his speech to honor his friend. He cared so much that he wouldn’t quit until he felt it was perfect. And when he took that stage he was. Just as he was today with his speech in Canton. Some people are just wired a certain way. With a work ethic and drive to be great in everything they do. It’s why Larry Fitzgerald is a Hall of Fame football player and Hall of Fame person.

This is where I lost it!! Gosh, I love this man.

Someone said America has become a torture chamber for smart people, and I couldn't agree more.

Scholarships get pulled all the time. Nobody’s arguing that. But when a four year commit, Ole Miss legacy, and productive player loses their spot because they have cancer, that’s not roster management. That’s a complete failure of basic decency.
