Some initial results on the minimum wage and firms’ pay structures: ➡️NLW led to wage compression in highly exposed firms ➡️Highly exposed firms increased pay of workers just above NLW, partly maintaining pay differentials ➡️No obvious changes in occupational structure

Investing too little for one year is manageable, but doing so year after year is a recipe for relative decline. This is precisely what the UK has been doing. Watch our new explainer on the radical reforms required to start investing in Britain's future. youtu.be/rMnoM1kcWLg

If tough sanctions and meagre benefits were a route to economic prosperity we would be a VERY prosperous country today. We’ve been doing it for years. Maybe time to try a different approach.
Looking ahead to the autumn statement, Chancellor Jeremy Hunt says there will be "tougher sanctions" on those who exploit the benefits system. Follow live politics updates: trib.al/YKanzN3 📺 Sky 501, Virgin 602, Freeview 233 and YouTube

Is there really an NHS productivity crisis? Or is just mismeasurement? In a new @TheIFS comment, @BenZaranko and I revisit this billion pound question… 1/18
Is there really an NHS productivity crisis? @MaxWarnerIFS and @BenZaranko look at the available evidence to investigate whether the NHS is less productive now than pre-pandemic⬇️ ifs.org.uk/articles/there…
One reason the government's poll ratings are so low is they keep doing things that they get away with in the media (like benefits cuts) but which have real world effects that mean people want to get rid of them.
I just don't believe any government is going to cut 9.5 million people's real incomes in an election year. The last time they cut benefits their poll lead collapsed. This isn't the early 2010s anymore!
Two important studies this week on local issues with major impacts on real incomes Superb work from Xiaowei on housing costs Earlier this week, the SMF produced a nice paper on transport costs (link below)
In 1968 housing costs made up 9% of average incomes for the poorest households and 4% for the richest. By 2021 this has gone up to 21% and 6% respectively. That is, housing costs now make up 3.5x as much of the budgets of the poor as of the rich. 🧵on our new @TheIFS report👇
NEW: Housing costs take up three-and-a-half times as much of the budgets of the poor as of the rich. We need to take housing costs into account to understand income poverty. THREAD on @JCribbEcon, Tom Wernham & @xiaoweixu_’s new report on housing costs and incomes: [1/5]
Whole state punishment when what’s needed is whole state support to help people far from the labour market and in ill health.
Sorry the idea that the government would use sick people’s medicine as leverage to get then back to work is obviously entirely heinous
This is quite moment in the evolution of the UK's welfare system. Govt is proposing entirely terminating the benefit claims of people who spend 18 months trying to get work, don't manage it and then don't agree to start doing unpaid work experience. gov.uk/government/new…
@xiaoweixu_ @TheIFS @JCribbEcon Aiui food costs and housing costs have essentially swapped since the 1950s; housing used to be cheap and food expensive. Now food is cheap, too cheap arguably given the environmental damage of intensive farming, and housing costs are 😲
You cannot understand poverty or inequality in the UK without understanding housing costs and what has been happening to them. They are a much bigger fraction of the budgets of the poor than the better off and have been rising far faster for the poor.

Great to discuss @TheIFS work on older workers in Parliament yesterday, and really interesting to hear from those with personal experience of using @ageukcampaigns services. Thanks to Age UK for organising and @rosaltmann for chairing!
We're delighted to be at Parliament hosting our APPG on Ageing and Older People. We'll be talking about Older People and Work. @rosaltmann has kicked off our discussion!
This would then not be an inflation uprating - it would be a real terms cut in benefits to the poorest purely to finance tax cuts for the better off (very much in the Cameron spirit, of course).
Hunt may use tomorrow's inflation print to uprate £100bn of working age benefits. Convention is to use Sept inflation. It was 6.7% then, forecast to be 4.7% now. Story with @EllenAMilligan bloomberg.com/news/articles/…
