Meeting Dr. Robert Spitzer, the creator of DSM, left me with an unshakable and almost uncanny gut feeling that here was a man who had no real understanding of human suffering.
To demedicalise distress is not to delegitimise distress. One can honor, respect and care for profound suffering without labeling it as illness, pathology or disorder.
It’s wild to me that #prescribedharm gets discarded, denigrated and dismissed as anti-psychiatry when, as time goes on, more and more medical bodies are slowly recognizing that we’ve been right the entire time.

If people reach a certain level of distress/impairment (which can be easily measured) they should be entitled to support, without having that impairment first medicalised, pathologised, depoliticised & stigmatised. Being medicalised shouldn't be a precondition for receiving care.

Accuracy can prevent death! Why avoiding addiction language matters: labeled addicted > detox > abrupt cessation > severe protracted/neurological harm > increased risk of suicide labeled physically dependent > slow taper > chance of avoiding long term harm

If you imagine it's fine for patients not to be informed of risk simply because you or your loved one has benefited in some way from said treatment, have a word with yourself. Patients harmed without #informedconsent are not collateral damage. Shouldn't need saying really.

Nearly every time I go for a swim it boosts my mood. Occasionally if I am feeling low it doesn't but I still get exercise. No antidepressant ever had any positive effect like this. I was on all types of antidepressant. I never needed them.

It’s wild to me that #prescribedharm gets discarded, denigrated and dismissed as anti-psychiatry when, as time goes on, more and more medical bodies are slowly recognizing that we’ve been right the entire time.
