Today on #CollectionsCorner, we take a look at a pin cushion in the Main Bedroom. It holds sewing pins and needles upright & are important when doing a sewing project. They can take many shapes like this one with embroidery or take shapes of objects like a tomato or hedgehog.

#MedicalMonday This bottle contains Glycerine, a clear liquid that was used as a topical ointment for moisturizing and wound care and was also a main ingredient in soap and cough medicine. Glycerine is still used today in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and in food as a sweetener.

#DYK there were many superstitions in Victorian times? Some thought mirrors were dangerous, claiming that a mirror’s reflection could capture a portion of the soul. This led them to believe that breaking a mirror would injure the spirit of the person who broke it.

Happy First Day of School! Many schools return to class today, with great memories! In the summer of '67, students from G.W. Williams took a learning cruise around N Europe on the SS Nevesa. Every week, a report was published in the Aurora Banner, like this one on July 19, 1967

#CollectionsCorner In the Dispensary, there is a wooden object that can be opened & closed- a medicine box. This case could have been used when Drs performed house calls, allowing access to medicines on the spot to treat a variety of sores.

#DYK that billiard balls were once made of celluloid, an early form of plastic? Unfortunately, celluloid is extremely combustible and often caused mini-explosions when the balls would hit each other. Nowadays, these balls are made out of resin, a safer alternative.

#DYK That Dr. Strange continued his military involvement after he moved from Aurora? While he hoped to stay with the York Rangers, he joined the Toronto-based Queen's Own Rifles in 1877, eventually rising to the rank of major and surgeon in 1881.

#CollectionsCorner Today, we're looking at a set of scarificators. Common tools in bloodletting, pushing a button would expose 12 adj blades which made small incisions on the skin of the patient. This practice of removing a patient's blood was an attempt to cure them of illness.

The Drs of Hillary House used this glass cup to measure medications. The cup uses minims, a historical unit of volume used in the apothecaries' system for measuring small quantities of liquid medicines. It would have been used in the Dispensary & carried while on house calls.

Death photography was very popular in Victorian & Edwardian times. These photos or daguerreotypes often included the deceased individual surrounded by flowers or favourite toys. As photography became more popular and accessible, death photography fell out of popularity.

#CollectionsCorner This black dress in the Main Bedroom is from the 1920s. The economy boomed after WW1, & feminist movements began. Women becoming more active, with fashion moving towards shorter skirts & simple shapes like the popular tubular “la garçonne” look seen here.

#MedicalMonday This book, "Pathology and Morbid Anatomy" was written by T. Henry Green and published in 1884. It focuses on pathology, the study of structural & functional changes that occur due to disease, providing a valuable look into medical understanding of the 19th century.

This type of "mustache cup" was common in the Victorian era, when mustaches were very popular and fashionable. These cups had a small ledge along the inside edge, allowing mustaches to remain dry when drinking. Mustaches, and these cups, would fall out of fashion around WW1.

When construction of the Sunnybrook subdivision began in 1959, all of the roads had a name that started with "sun". Although well-intended, it was confusing for many, including mail & emergency services. The names were changed in 1961, with only Sunray Place remaining the same.
