PIP is not a welfare 'safety net'. It's part of a framework of financial and practical assistance designed to support disabled people to participate on an equal basis with others throughout life. Any reform has to be evaluated through that lens.
More today on government thinking about overhauling social security support for disabled people. Their starting point should be: - 26% disabled people face hunger (x3 rate for non-disabled people). - 7/10 people referred to @TrussellTrust foodbanks are disabled. We see...1/6
This afternoon I spoke to the wife of a man approaching retirement age who has been medically retired from his job but rejected for both ESA and PIP. His wife has had to hide all their knives as she is terrified he'll harm himself. This is state cruelty not sickness culture.
Once upon a time, when asked to think the unthinkable on welfare, Frank Field suggested people with ASBO's should live in tents under motorway bridges. google.com/amp/s/amp.theg… Today's welfare 'ideas' come from the same, mad as a box of frogs, drawer in the DWP /1
So where exactly is the PIP consultation? It looks like it was released on gov.uk , indexed by Google, and then pulled? google.com/search?q=Disab…
The process is a 50 page form, sending in extra evidence and for 82% of claims an independent assessment. Only 41% of claims are successful. When I advise people I tell them that it will probably take months and an appeal. 70% of appeals are successful. Not an easy system! 2/2
Around 7 in 10 working-age adults in a family where someone receives PIP and no-one is in work are in material deprivation. 3 times as much as the rate across all working-age households. 💥 Over 40% experienced food insecurity 💥 Over 30% were unable to keep their homes warm
I really regret going back to work repeatedly when I was too mentally ill to do so and then letting colleagues down, often in a very messy and last minute fashion. I was desperate to be well and back working effectively but funnily enough my recovery was not linear and I couldn’t…
This system is such a mess. Carers allowance is so low people face hunger & debt. It's so badly designed it misses many who really need it AND disincentivises work. While the government is desperate to get more people working more. It's not compassionate, just or effective.

Which as Gareth Parry from @MaxUKnews pointed out to the @CommonsWorkPen last week, means for first time in a generation we will have literally no nationally available, specialist employment support for disabled people. Still not too late to fix this though if govt wanted to 3/3
Lots of people, including us, flagged at both 2023 Spring Budget and the Autumn Statement that 'Universal Support' would at best replace WHP, and argued for extending WHP and/ or Restart to bridge the gap. But govt won't do either, while Universal Support is hugely delayed. 2/3
Important this from @itsjamestapper. The Work and Health Programme (WHP) has helped nearly 4k disabled people a month since 2020, with almost half getting jobs. Its closure was inevitable after 7 years, but the failure to have any kind of replacement for it was not... 1/3

Did the number of self-employed people fall by 15% between 2019-20 and 2021-22 (Labour Force Survey), or actually not fall at all (tax data)? (obr.uk/efo/economic-a…)
The UK welfare system is driven by biomedical understandings of work limitation. This obscures the multiple structural, economic and relational factors that pose barriers to employment. PEOPLE'S DISTRESS IS REAL. But to fully understand work capacity, we need a broader lens. 👇🔗

It was a press release, which the wayback machine can show you. Attached:
@AnitaBellows12 @BenBaumberg I think they just put up a holding page by mistake (possibly with SEO copy in). Stride's giving a statement this afternoon so it'll land right after that - Parliament sits at 2.30, I would guess about 3pm for his statement.
I’m grateful for those who have the resilience and energy to engage and resist the attacks on disabled people from @RishiSunak right now. I apologise but I’m all out of resources to fight
Can’t we just have one week without disabled benefit claimants being demonised? It’s so stressful to keep reading this stuff.
This is a good question. Why have heat pumps become a bit of a contentious topic in the UK? I'm late to it, but wanted to have a proper go at answering it... 🧵
I'm proper fascinated by how the general vibes around heatpumps in Britain became so negative (at worst) or indifferent (at best). I am hugely sceptical of the top answer I've been given (right wing media bias and an anti-expert society) by most people I've asked about it.
Justice for @EurostarUK catering workers
🎉 I'm thrilled to announce that I've started a new role as Corporate Director, Partnerships & Engagement @MoneyPensionsUK where I'll contribute to mission to help millions of people & coordinate the UK's Financial Wellbeing Strategy ♥️ linkedin.com/posts/msnaomip… #leadership #NewJob

@NHSEngland @NHSPracHealth I personally, will not rest until @NHSPracHealth is open again to all in Secondary Care who previously had access. And I will campaign vigorously for access to be widened; WHEN @NHSEngland realise ONLY way it can proceed, is by supporting and funding this vital service 8/11
The response to the Ombudsman's report on women's state pension age reminds us, once again, that many WASPI campaigners protest not 'maladministration' but the adjustment of their retirement age per se.
@BenBaumberg Like this? It works in one panel here.
Thank you @ChrisGPackham for being so open about being autistic. Today's Newsround made my child confident and proud enough to tell his classmates he's autistic too. Being able to see yourself represented by famous experts really makes a difference.
Excellent explainer on "out of work benefit" statistics from (my fantastic colleague) @BenBaumberg. inequalities.substack.com/p/a-further-wo…
@jdportes @KateAndrs have you seen @BenBaumberg's articles on this? inequalities.substack.com/p/why-you-cant…
@KateAndrs 1. "Near-record" still misleading - it's down from 17% to about 13.5%, and even that ignores substantial definitional changes resulting from move to UC which have pushed up total. See @BenBaumberg here. It's well below 90s levels, right? inequalities.substack.com/p/why-you-cant…
Great piece highlighting that continuity + trust b/w employment supp workers and participants is key. "I think that really targeted support, people knowing that you are there as their named keyworker, you’re not going anywhere, you’ve absolutely got this, is so important."
I've been privileged to work with @BetterConnectUK to showcase their fantastic person-centred approaches to employment support, whilst also elevating the voices of keyworkers who experience both joys and challenges in this essential work. Read more here: bit.ly/3I7sG5H
Wow! So I'm on WhatsApp talking to my dad and @policy_practice gets mentioned on TV while he's watching... Attendance Allowance... £5,306 per year. Your dad finally understanding what you do... PRICELESS. Thanks @MartinSLewis Download the report: policyinpractice.co.uk/unclaimed-aa/
Trying to resist the temptation to respond to refusal of reasonable adjustments with a very sarky email citing examples of my previous failures to build strong relationships working part time.
Fantastic deep dive by @BenBaumberg into UC figures and why some of them are wrong and others mean something different than what we think. "The misunderstandings are making people see the problem in the wrong light, missing some of the real issues that need fixing."
