Really good thread on changes to Universal Credit and particularly conditionality that could benefit claimants as well as the State.

Yesterday's poverty statistics were bad but not surprising Govt attempts to alleviate poverty have fallen short, held back by punitive and unwise policies Inevitably areas that have more children impacted by the two-child limit have experienced larger increases in child poverty
Yesterday's poverty statistics were bad but not surprising Govt attempts to alleviate poverty have fallen short, held back by punitive and unwise policies Inevitably areas that have more children impacted by the two-child limit have experienced larger increases in child poverty https://t.co/ws4XSzYpFu
New data from the DWP shows that almost half of children in larger families are living in poverty We've lost so much progress on child poverty as a result of insecure work, cuts to social security (including the two-child limit), and a failure to provide safe, affordable housing
The move to UC looks set to save ~£2.6bn per year (in-work UC spend) The NAO say that so far, rather than migrating onto UC, ~20% of the tax credit caseload are seeing their support end, much higher than the 3% DWP initially assumed.
Changes to Child Benefit are welcome, but the wrong priority The Chancellor should instead be scrapping the Two-Child Limit to support families hit hardest by the cost of living and lift 490,000 children out of poverty #Budget2024
Increasing the repayment length on budgeting advances is welcome - it impacts more households on UC than any other type of deduction But it's only so widely used because UC fails to cover the cost of essentials. This policy needs to go hand in hand with increased adequacy
Richest households will benefit 12 times more than poorest from national insurance cut, says thinktank – UK politics live great headline for @UKLabour theguardian.com/politics/live/…

If anyone in politics wants a fitting memorial to Frank, rather than just pious words, it would be the abolition of the two-child limit, the topic of his very last report. He wrote: “No Government should be willing to accept” it and its consequences. committees.parliament.uk/committee/164/…

This is insane shit. "Access to treatment". What? People with debilitating health conditions should already be getting access to NHS treatment, and if not, that'll be because of long waiting lists, which twiddling with PIP rules doesn't solve. Sunak is an absolute clowndork.
The PM is now pushing ahead with a consultation on Personal Independence Payments that was almost published previously (but was considered too controversial). It has some pretty radical ideas including replacing cash payments with access to treatment 1/
Advice for scholars: next time you lecture on Kant and revolutions at “Downing” (@DarwinCollege) Cambridge, make sure your hair is neatly tied and that you’re not blonde. Or else your research impact will be on the @spectator libido section.
@NeilCouling @billwells_1 @PaulBivand @tonywilsonIES @RaoulRuparel @DWP Neil, without taking a view on substance (which I genuinely don't have) isn't it profoundly shocking if you/DWP can't tell us with a simple graph/statistic whether the increase in numbers on health-related out-of-work benefits is driven by increased inflows, durations or both?
Everything about this is disappointing - not to even mention the stealing of artistic labour and replacing it with mindless (de)generative "music" - but to speak to the economic impact on musicians who rely on making smaller tunes or jingles for adverts or gig-jobs.

While inflation has come down to 3.2%, private rents definitely have not. @jrf_uk analysis this morning shows that across GB, rents increased by an average of £104 a month (9.1%) over the last year, & in London by £207 per month (11.2%). The cost of living crisis is not over.

I’m really feeling the loss of Newsnight. Leaves a huge gap in the TV schedules for reports that go into more depth than a news segment, without the long lead time and investment required for a full Panorama-style investigation.

Worrying stats here about claimants becoming subject to conditionality or even losing eligibility in migration from legacy benefits onto UC by @Sam_Tims, esp. as migration is still ongoing with an additional 400k planned for April-September 2024.
This impacts those on UC and those migrating from legacy benefits 1/2 million families (99% on tax credits) have been asked to move onto UC and will experience a more intense form of conditionality But so far 1/5 closed migration claims have resulted in support ending entirely
