Nice to get this article on the Ontario fiscal outlook published on the TVO www site. tvo.org/article/whats-…
Today's blog post reminds me it's been a while since I shared one of my favourite @Environics_Inst memes. (h/t to xkcd.com/2456/).
From 2014 to COVID, 🇨🇦 saw absolutely impressive progress in poverty reduction. Not just ⬇️ poverty rate but also: — Fewer entering poverty. — Fewer persisting in poverty. — More exiting poverty faster. Say what you will about @JustinTrudeau but that’s a big deal. #cdnpoli

Good article in the Globe and Mail this week on the Bank of Canada overhauling thier economic models. Sounds promising, but no model built on past data and economic relationships can be expected to perform well when confronted by unprecidented events like the COVID-19 pandemic.
Great to have this piece on the forthcoming Ontario Fall Economic Statement released by Ontario360 today. on360.ca/policy-papers/…
Federal GST exemption for rental housing is useful, but it is not enough. There are options available that would have a larger impact.
We need bold and meaningful policy actions to help increase the supply rental #housing across #Canada. Senior Fellow Brian Lewis writes about the #tax policy options to consider: bit.ly/47W0bUn #IntelligenceMemo

Turns out that positive capital taxes are positively correlated with output per work hour.

I had a colleague, who will remain nameless, who said that she repeated anything an English person said back to herself in her head to decide whether it was actually clever, or just the accent.

This is one of the most fascinating charts from #Budget2024. It goes to show you why the per-capita GDP discourse is all screwed up as a result of denominator effects. Immigrants are working more and their incomes are higher consistently cohort over cohort. cc @PatrickBrethour

People are just utterly lying to you about the way Canadian Controlled Private Corporations work. Most of us have no appreciable capital gains of any kind inside of our corporation. We pay corporate (usually small business) taxes and distribute salaries (or dividends).
There are probably slightly easier ways to say you are both lazy and you failed math
#REPORT: Canadians now have to pay 66% capital gains tax on all their profits over $250,000 🇨🇦
The more the richest 40,000 Canadians (top 0.1%) tantrum about having to declare 66.7% of their capital gains *above* $250K/yr (while the rest of us have to declare 100% of our humble labour income), the stronger these poll numbers are gonna become. Please carry on!! #cdnpoli

Low Marginal Effective Tax rates are important for capital investment. But, frankly, if they were as important as many people claim, Canada would be doing much better on the capital investment front. policyschool.ca/wp-content/upl…
And the biggest concern about the deficit comes from folks who bought a two million dollar cottage in Muskoka in 1984 for $35,000 and are upset they’ll have to pay more tax on it.
Here’s Michael Smart one of Canada’s top economists: “Smart said the increase to the inclusion rate would also level the playing field for businesses and encourage better investment decisions, rather than ones that are the most tax-advantageous” kitchener.citynews.ca/2024/04/17/cap… #cdnpoli
👆Do not be fooled by the simplistic “pay their fair share” slogan. That is pure political speak, not sound economics.
I was part of over a half-dozen tech startups early in my career. You want to know how many times capital gains tax came up in conversation as we were trying to grow our companies? Exactly zero times. This won’t stifle grassroots innovation.
@journo_dale I’ve been privileged to know many in the tech community who have started businesses. The number that have said taxes impact their decision to do so is precisely 0.
Because cap gains were too lightly taxed, firms had the incentive to buy back their own shares (which raises the stock price) rather than retain funds inside the firm to be reinvested.
Judging by the replies to the tweet, some have strong reactions to tax increases no matter the details. That's where this is interesting. Even tax averse individuals could get behind a change in the inclusion rate. Other tax changes could compensate.
How funny would it be if the governor-general reads the budget.
