@Hititlonger Front-foot contact and swing launch aren’t the same event. I can land and still hold the swing. The lead side accepts force as the swing launches and turns, but I don’t view the lead foot as what initiates that launch.

Every single one is backside loaded at launch. They’ve moved forward without giving up the backside.

Turn the barrel. Don’t push it. The barrel doesn’t take the shortest geometric line from launch to the baseball. It works rearward first, turning behind the hitter as the body tilts and organizes over the backside. That early depth gives the barrel room to accelerate without the hands and arms having to shove it forward. That’s what I mean when I talk about turning the barrel with the hands. The body creates the turn, while the hands and wrists compound that movement by rotating the handle and allowing the barrel to work back, down, and around. You can see it here. The barrel gets deep behind the ball before it ever works out toward it. That creates speed, connection, and a larger window for adjustability than pushing the barrel directly toward contact. Same hitter. Different understanding of how the barrel should work. On the right, I was trying to get forward, use my arms and drive through the baseball. The result was a swing that wanted to travel forward too early. On the left, the forward move happens without immediately sending the swing forward. I stay loaded into the backside longer, create tilt, and turn the barrel rearward/down the back before it works out toward the ball. That gives the barrel depth instead of push. The hands aren’t racing toward the baseball. They’re helping turn the barrel behind it while the torso turns underneath/around that action. From there, the backside can deliver the barrel through the zone. Forward move without a forward swing. Move forward. Stay stacked. Turn the barrel rearward. Let the turn deliver it. Same athlete. That’s the point of the post. With the swing on the right, catching a ball that deep was extremely difficult for me. I needed to get to the ball farther out front. The pattern on the left gave me the barrel depth to let the ball travel and still deliver it effectively. The different contact points aren’t a flaw in the comparison, they’re part of what I’m showing.

Both worked. The biggest difference for me was the margin for error. As velo went up, having more barrel depth allowed me to catch the ball deeper, which gave me more time to see the pitch and make a decision. More time meant better decisions and a wider window where I could be slightly off with timing and still produce. With the first swing, I had to make that decision earlier and catch the ball farther out front. I could still hit that way, but I didn’t have the same margin for error or time. My average, power and OPS all went up as that changed.

I disagree. You’re defining a rearward barrel turn by how dramatically the barrel visually blurs down the back. I’m defining it by the actual direction the barrel is turning. My hands aren’t pushing forward toward the ball there. The barrel is turning rearward as I organize behind it. Could it work even deeper? Sure. That doesn’t make it a push.

@bamahurin I agree the body turns the barrel. I’ve never argued otherwise. My point is that the hands and wrists compound that movement. Those things aren’t mutually exclusive. I’m not Teacherman, and I’m not arguing for every term or concept he uses.

‼️Basement Breakdown‼️ “Take the barrel straight to the ball” can be a feel, but it’s not what the barrel actually does in a high-level swing. The barrel works rearward before it works forward. I like to feel the hands turning the handle and sending the barrel back as the backside begins to turn. That gets the barrel working deep into the zone instead of pushing it forward toward the baseball. That rearward barrel action, combined with a little bit of tilt, is where the slight upward path comes from. The barrel gets behind the ball and the turn carries it through the zone, giving you much more room for error from deep contact all the way out front. There’s a difference between using “straight to the ball” as a cue and teaching it as the literal movement. Friday night @Aces_SoftballKC 16U Black needed additional players, so I was able to get some extra innings. In the circle I had 4 IP with 7Ks. At the plate I was 4/4 and hit my first 2 bombs 💣 of the 26-27 season! No, he obviously didn’t mean to hit it like that. He made the decision to swing, realized he was early, and made an athletic adjustment. That doesn’t contradict what I said above. I said you’re not completely reorganizing the swing after commitment, not that adjustments can’t happen within the movement. This is an off-time, adjusted swing. I’m teaching the ideal barrel action in my original video, not how to intentionally produce this swing you’re showing. The fact that he maintained enough organization to adjust and still get the barrel there is exactly what adjustability is. So what exactly do you think this swing disproves about what I said?

I’m ready to swing at release. As I recognize the pitch (out of the hand), I organize where I’m going to turn the barrel. Once I commit to that path, I’m not trying to redirect the barrel mid-swing. Sometimes my read will be wrong and I’ll swing and miss. So be it. Adjustability doesn’t mean you can make a bad decision and then completely reorganize the swing after you’ve committed.

Yes and no. It’s a feel, but the intent is real. I’m actually trying to turn/send the barrel rearward. The barrel does work rearward. Feeling my hands turn the handle is how I organize that action without pushing the barrel forward. I’m not saying the feel is a literal description of one isolated wrist movement.

Rearward. I said that in the video lol. I don’t know exactly what Judge feels because I’m not him and I’ve never spoken to him. I’m explaining the feel I use to create that rearward barrel action and keep myself back. I’m not claiming every hitter consciously feels the same thing. If that feel helps someone create the right movement, then it did its job.

Why would the hands helping initiate the barrel prevent the wrists from continuing to change later in the swing? Those aren’t mutually exclusive. I’m not saying the wrists articulate once and then lock. I’m saying I use my hands as a feel to initiate the rearward barrel action. The wrist angles continue to change as the swing progresses through and beyond contact.

Also, there is obviously rearward action of the barrel early in the turn. The barrel works in a curved path, (a C-shape/Nike swoosh) not a straight line forward to the ball. That rearward action isn’t an opinion; it’s observable in the movement. The exact shape and direction adjust with pitch location.

@speckcaller Yes, I teach that rearward feel on every pitch. For me, it keeps the swing from rushing forward or getting heavy on the front side. If I lose that feel, I lose my backside and adjustability. The direction of the turn adjusts to pitch location but the intent stays the same.

I understand that. Higher pitch, more horizontal turn. Lower pitch, more vertical turn. The barrel obviously isn’t going to work through the exact same location on every pitch. I have a couple minutes to explain a concept—I’m teaching the pattern and a feel, not every possible adjustment within it.
