On my hardest days in academia, I’m reminded of the power of representation & the impact of my presence. For many Black girls, I am the 1st Black woman professor they’ve ever had, so when they see me, they don’t just see what I’ve done but what THEY can do. They are my “why”(3/3)
Keep fighting to make “normal cities” more normal.
Canada has a choice. Do we want to talk about the housing crisis, or do we want to solve it? As for where the federal government stands: It's time to build.

ON SUBURBAN SPRAWL: “Bankrupting municipal budgets, creating epidemics of preventable diseases, and helping to cause climate change — that’s how you start a conversation about why the suburbs need to change, and why more of our growth should go to infill and transit-oriented…
“While the city planners were busily envisioning a more compact, mixed-use urban form that would curb sprawl, and developing policies and regulations to secure it, down the hall the finance advisors were concocting financial instruments that would encourage and subsidize sprawl.…
BC has now: ✅ Legalized apts near transit ✅ Begun re-legalizing top quality 1-stair floorplans ✅ Legalized fire-resistive mass timber up to 18 stories All on top of North America's largest fully automated metro. This is our continent's highest-performing government today
This morning, I updated the BC Building Code with #MassTimber changes - effective immediately - that will: ✅Allow for 18 stories. ✅Allow for 9 stories without drywall. ✅Allow for different building structures - like schools and libraries. 🧵[1/5]

And there's no comparison in the land use response: Towers around almost every station in greater Vancouver, light rail stations in ravines next to highways in Portland, with few buildings over 4 stories near stations outside downtown. 2/
I love Portland and love living here, but let's not kid ourselves. We built transit to create a feel of European urbanism that appealed to developers and leaders at the time. Vancouver built (and is building) transit to liberate and transform the entire region. 3/
To be clear on what I mean by “mostly illegal,” community-level zoning too often only allows some convenience commercial uses in very limited (and mostly unwalkable) specially zoned locations designed to be small centres/strip malls built & managed by developers (typically leased…
Make walkable convenience shopping widely legal in communities. Currently it’s mostly illegal in neighbourhoods in North America, Australia/NZ, etc. Corner coffee shops, convenience stores, etc. If we’re really serious about complete, “15-minute” neighbourhoods, this is obvious.
