John Harvell has coached Christopher Newport for 27 years, and he told me he refuses to put deadlines on recruits. Kids get caught up in timelines, asked to make a decision they haven't thought through, and then they are not happy when they get there. His line: If they want you badly enough, they will wait. Remember that the next time an artificial deadline shows up in your son's inbox.

Homework from a head coach, worth doing tonight: have your son make columns. His dream school. His academic school. His fallback school. He has to have options; one dream school only rarely works out. That is John Harvell's assignment to every family, and it costs nothing but an honest hour at the kitchen table.

The defense against that, from the same coach: your son puts himself in front of the coach, not in front of a brochure. Go to one of the coach's own events or send the email. I am going to be at this event; are you going to be there? Five words that either confirm the look or save you four hundred dollars. Harvell checks his email every day, pretty much every hour. They are reachable.

I kept this story in my pocket for a long time.... September 15th is Roberto Clemente Day. Every year in Pittsburgh the whole organization fans out across the city. It's like Christmas. Roberto's family is there, Vera and the boys. My first year as manager in Pittsburgh was 2011. We celebrated. We shook hands and moved on. We didn't win. 19 consecutive losing seasons. 2012 rolls around. Same day, same celebration. We had another losing season, our 20th consecutive. After the ceremony, Roberto Jr. walked over. "My mom wants to talk to you." We went into the dugout. Me, Vera, and her three sons. She spoke in Spanish. I played four years of winter ball so I understood enough. She wasn't angry, but she was passionate. And I kept hearing Roberto's number come up. Roberto Jr. translated. "My mother wants you to know that there cannot be a 21st losing season. That was Roberto's number. It would be a disgrace to his legacy." She was staring right at me. Before I could even think about what to say, words came out of my mouth: "I promise you, Vera. That won't happen." Roberto Jr. looked at me and said, "You made my mom a promise. I hope you can keep it." I said, "I hope I can keep it too." I didn't tell my coaches. I didn't tell the players. I told my wife. That was it. The next year, 2013, we broke the consecutive seasons losing streak. Ended it at 20. On Roberto Clemente Day that September, Vera came walking across that field. And I probably got one of the most meaningful hugs I've ever received in my life. The players did all the heavy lifting. I just got the hug. Some promises are worth making before you know if you can keep them. @Pirates

A 27-year head coach said this on my show, on the record: "You would be surprised how many events over the years will list me as a participant , and I never heard of it. " Read that again. Showcase events have advertised coaches as attending who were never invited and never knew the event existed. He named no events. He did not have to. Ask before you pay.

🚨 Coach Cal sounds the alarm on private equity coming for college sports

Families need the facts on this, not the noise. Rep. Tim Walberg and Sen. Jon Husted are introducing a bill that would cap international student-athletes at 20% of a college varsity roster. The official name is the Training and Education for American Members in University Sports and Athletics Act. They’re calling it the TEAM USA Act. What it actually does: it would amend the Higher Education Act of 1965. Schools that want to keep participating in Title IV federal student-aid programs would have to keep international athletes at or below 20% of each varsity team. That is the leverage. Not an NCAA bylaw. Federal funding eligibility. This is an introduction, not a law. It still has to move through Congress. A lot of bills get announced and never become policy. Treat it that way. Why it matters for recruiting families: roster spots, scholarships, and who gets developed on campus are already tight. International recruiting has grown for years because talent is global and coaches chase the best available player. A hard cap would change how staffs build rosters, especially in sports where international numbers run highest. If you have a high school or transfer-portal athlete, do not panic and do not assume anything changes tomorrow. Ask the same questions you should already be asking: What does the current roster look like? How many international players are already on it? Where would my son actually fit if the rules shifted? Development, academics, and the right-fit school still decide more outcomes than any headline. Stay informed. Stay calm. Keep building the player.

Pyne was equally honest about the limits of a coach's support. We can't guarantee admission; I am not the dean. But we have never lost somebody that we supported. And nobody we offer our support to would ever find out through an email in December that they did not get in. That is what genuine support sounds like: no guarantees, a track record, and a promise about how you will be treated.
