Folks. Sign language is more than hands. More than fingers. More than hand shapes. It’s body, face, position... A glove will never ‘translate’ sign language in a way that is beneficial to the deaf. Fellow nerds, when designing, remember this: “nothing about us, without us.”

A story in two parts
Just seen a trailer for the film Come As You Are. 3 disabled men (who insist on person-first language), played by able-bodied men, go on a road trip because people "like them" don't get laid. And ableds are praising it for being good disabled representation. I'm gonna be sick.
There are still way too many sentences that begin: “Even those with disabilities should have. . .” That thinking reeks of ableism. That thinking must be re-oriented: “Those with disabilities, like everyone else, should have. . .”

@TaraTomahawk My youth group had the girls draw on a picture of a woman how low her skirt should be and talked about modesty and not leading men to sin by sexualising ourself. I said a woman could be naked and would still not be responsible for the actions of men. The leader was not happy.
I was really excited for #WarriorNun. Badass women fighting supernatural evil! Within the first twelve minutes of the pilot there's a magical disability cure. To paraphrase the MC: "I may be in hell, but my legs work, so it's worth it!" It is #DisabilityPrideMonth. And I'm tired.
Fun fact: a little while ago I was working on a project with NPR and it had to be dropped because according to their policy I self identified as a disability activist which makes me inherently “biased.”
Too many Ableds only validate disability narratives if disabled people are striving towards abled-ness as the goal and it doesn’t sit right with me.
