@antlionai @Empty_America New York funds Medicaid in part through county taxes so even poor, run down counties have high property taxes to fund Medicaid locally.

@bobbyfijan Our school district has neighborhood schools as the default, and the option of lottery for a different school. You do see people move to specific neighborhoods for the school as opposed to chancing the lottery.

@dan_hues @Empty_America We do all that in New York too… especially in the rural districts I think cost of living has the most to do with it. Even in the cheaper areas, houses are affordable but taxes are outrageous due to counties paying for Medicaid. Our schools are not as great in cities.

Why the Midwest is currently my favorite part of the US 1) It still manufactures a lot, and that gives people good meaningful jobs that ground them to reality. The American Dream is still alive here. 2) People are not performative, with a genuineness divorced from promotion. What is the stereotype to play to? Naive, boring, sincerity with a touch of drunk? 3) and like all of the US, every city here has bunch of brew-pubs and great restaurants. The idea that you can only get lattes, home-crafted IPAs, etc, on the coasts is crazy. Everywhere in the country now has great options, especially here. 4) Oh, Great Lakes beaches are vastly under-rated 5) Culver's In praise of the Midwest, my latest piece walkingtheworld.substack.com/p/in-praise-of…

@shagbark_hick @wrowclif I suspect Fort Drum is the primary reason Watertown metro has such a high rate as it does.

@simonsarris @Romy_Holland At the same time, in our apartment someone breaking in would need to get through 3 sets of locked doors to get into our unit… I think a house would be much easier to break into. Usually we sit with our neighbors on our stoop while baby sleeps upstairs.

Thanks to the logic of agglomeration economies, America's superstar cities will always centers of elite talent and the FOTB immigrants who serve them, but the middle class has moved en masse to the South and they've taken a lot of financial/social/cultural capital with them.
