Oh lord, Dan Dennett has died. That's a huge loss to the intellectosphere. He ruffled lots of feathers and often divided opinion, but he was a phenomenal thinker and always worth listening to. And a fabulous writer.

AI based on deep learning (DL) performs no better than random quessing outside it's training data. Why? DL is just fancy data compression able to only rehash the past. With occasional generalization on toy problems not representative of reality.

Come on, @newscientist, “deep-learning neural networks” are not “systems modelled on the way brains work”. They are organized piles of matrix multiplication trained on amounts of data no human is ever exposed to, with only the vaguest connection to how actual brains work.

As everyone in philosophy is pointing out, this is wrong. But I find it interesting that the sort of compatibilist view Dennett and so many philosophers favor is so counterintuitive to the general public that they often can’t even comprehend it.
I hope it doesn’t cause any distress to people in the FND community if they read opinions like this from psychiatrists. Being disengaged with a patient community does not excuse ignorance.
I’m 100% in support of the arguments made here and have been disappointed by the unconvincing evidence advanced to suggest that functional disorders are anything but psychologically driven.

What this person is calling “Medical paternalism” is actually a very reasonable and well thought out take by a physician that most physicians, including myself agree with. I’m not stopping anybody from paying $3500 to get a full body MRI if they want. It’s a free market. But…
@DrSiyabMD @DrJenGunter 100% agree. The "medical paternalism" supposedly identified by @nealkhosla is simply an accurate description of the place of diagnostic radiology in the chain of medical decision-making.
@DrSiyabMD Any business selling these scans should be obligated to provide follow up visits and care plans. That's it. If it falls on PCPs then it shouldnt exist. I hope they are doing that.
