One of the most bizarre academic articles ever written. Karle Banse in 1990 made the argument (tongue in cheek?) that mermaids had existed until they were wiped out by a jellyfish epidemic. Sources include marine biology tomes and mermaid fiction, not least The Little Mermaid!

@MScarince @AaronIrber @BenEspen @Fredosphere Astute and correct, I would say, and this is why I personally rate Wolfe and Murnane at the top of the art. But I recognize it’s not a criterion all would apply.
@GeltnerJonathan @AaronIrber @Fredosphere I think it isn't often productive to compare fiction writers, but in this case I think Wolfe and Powers are both writers worthy of thoughtful reading, and since I know Fred I wanted to weigh in.
