In Texas I went to a game where the entire student side of the stadium did not sit down for four hours. I assumed the seats were broken. I checked the one next to me. It worked. I asked a student named Tyler why nobody was sitting. He said, "In case they need us." That was the whole answer. In my land we have a saying, always on the battlefield. A samurai does not lounge in the presence of a lord who may call him. He stands, so that when the call comes there is no distance between the call and the man. Here were thirty thousand of them. Standing. In case. I asked Tyler how often they are needed. He thought about it. "Once." Once. In 1922. The team was running out of healthy men, and a student named Gill was called down out of the stands. He put on an injured player's uniform and stood on the sideline, ready, for the rest of the game. He never went in. They won without him. That is the whole origin. A man who did not play. A hundred years of standing for a man who did not play. So I stood. I am not a student. I was not going to be called under any reading of the rules. My knees began filing complaints in the third quarter and I ignored them, because Tyler was nineteen and had stood through every home game for three years and had never once been called, and was not bitter about it, and was in fact eating nachos. Nobody was called. Nobody has been called since 1922. The knees of Texas do not care. In my land we say be ready at every moment. Texas built thirty thousand seats and refuses to use them.

In 1988 Dolly Parton pulled every 7th and 8th grader in Sevier County into a room and told them to pick a buddy. She made them sign a contract.. if BOTH graduate, she hands you both $500. One fails, nobody gets paid. The county dropout rate went from 35% to 6%. She handed out the checks herself. In 1989 she offered $500 to every kid in the county who wanted to go to the local college. When Gatlinburg burned in 2016, she sent 900 families $1,000 a month for six months. You've probably heard that part. Here's the part you haven't: The fund raised more than expected, so she showed up in May and handed every one of those families another $5,000 on top. Then she quietly put $3 million into the recovery group that handles the years after the news trucks leave. She built her county an entire hospital. She played a benefit concert in 2007, Dollywood and the Stampede matched it, and LeConte Medical Center opened in 2010 with a birthing unit and a women's center in it. In 2022 she started covering 100% of tuition, books, and fees for Dollywood employees. Full-time, part-time, AND seasonal. In 1991 she paid for a bald eagle sanctuary because the birds couldn't be released back into the wild, no press release. And when Hurricane Helene came through here in Western North Carolina, she wrote a personal check for $1 million and her companies matched it. She didn't owe North Carolina anything, but she helped us anyway. She started the Imagination Library because her daddy couldn't read or write. Before he passed, he told her it was the most important thing she ever did. Rest in Peace, Dolly 🇺🇸

Fernwood Bakery on Maple Street in Galveston, Texas. Every morning at 8:10, the same thing happens. The door is propped open for deliveries. A tan mixed-breed with a gray muzzle walks in. Ignores the bread. Ignores the customers. Goes directly to the owner, Rosa, 67, who lost her husband of 41 years last spring. The dog, who the staff calls Dulce, stands up and wraps both paws around Rosa's shoulders. Holds for about fifteen seconds. Then leaves. This has happened every morning for six months. Rosa told us: "I don't know where she comes from. She won't take food. She won't stay. She just comes to hug me and then goes." Her daughter said: "Dulce started coming the week after the funeral. Same time. Every single day." Some things arrive exactly when they are needed most.

Remember when ESPN showed Australian rules football all the time and every score was punctuated by a guy in a hat reacting like Isaac after he’d just mixed a perfect margarita on the Love Boat?
