♠️♦️♣️♥️ Poker exploded in popularity approx. 21 years ago, and I've poured thousands of hours into playing and studying no-limit hold 'em cash. Here are 21 hopefully-helpful thoughts and tips about the game: ♠️ Game selection is the most crucial factor in poker. The 5,000th-best golfer on 🌎 is gonna struggle bigly to make money playing golf, but the 5,000th-best poker player can realistically make a killing, depending on his game selection. ♠️ Aside from game selection, tight, disciplined play is your biggest edge. In general, play big pots w/ big hands and small pots w/ medium/weak hands, and you'll probably do alright. ♠️ Always have a reason for the play you're making (overwhelmingly, there are only two reasons to bet or raise: to get value from inferior holdings, or to bluff out superior holdings). If you want to be a crusher, consistently making plays that are profitable while avoiding plays that are unprofitable isn't enough; you must consistently choose plays that are *extremely* profitable, which requires a mixture of "art" and "science." ♠️ Position is crucial, b/c it determines who acts last postflop. This advantage is associated w/ having additional information prior to making decisions, as well as additional maneuverability. Account for this reality by playing much looser preflop from late position (cutoff, button) than from early position (under the gun, middle position, etc.). ♠️ Don't play streets in isolation; have fluid plans for the hands you're in ♠️ Getting value from weak players tends to be much easier than bluffing them ♠️ You must understand the basic math behind what's happening (equities and pot odds), but in general, this math isn't extremely complicated, and poker is more of a logic game than a math game ♠️ A non-tiny preflop 3-bet from a weak player probably means QQ+ or AK ♠️ A large turn raise from a weak player usually means a monster (@AndrewSeidmanBW figured this out 15+ years ago) ♠️ Get in the habit of always knowing approx. how much money's in the pot, even in hands in which you're not involved (if you're trying to improve at poker, make a habit of closely observing + analyzing other players' hands) ♠️ Hand reading is kinda like a puzzle. Observe what the opponent does on each street and do your best to piece together the "story" he's telling. Is the story consistent? Does it make sense that he did X preflop, Y on that specific flop, and then Z on that specific turn after player A folded on the flop from position C but player B called from position D? Be like a woman; develop the habit of silently administering "congruence" tests at the table. 🤷‍♂️ ♠️ Almost never reveal information about your poker game. This includes being generally unwilling to discuss strategy at the table. In a game of incomplete information, volunteering information is usually foolish. ♠️ Poker can be at least as much of a grind as anything else, including a 9-5 jerb. There'll be times when you won't feel like playing, but if you're serious about earning money from the game, you must find a way to consistently get hours in, including during periods of struggle. ♠️ Be nice to -- and ideally, quite conversational with -- people, both other players and poker-room staff. Being able to make money by playing a card game is a luxury, and you never know whom you're sitting with. Exercise human decency, especially when running bad. It's good for the game, for your psyche, and for your fellow players. ♠️ Expanding on the idea directly above: people play poker for different reasons, some of which have no connection to winning + making money. Acknowledge and respect this reality. ♠️ If a recreational player asks you whether you're a pro/a winning player, the answer is usually no. Check your ego and keep in mind the reasons you're playing. ♠️ Unpleasant stretches of results are inevitable, regardless of your level of edge. Live poker only allows for 25-30 hands/hour, and we need hand volume to reach "the long run." Edge poker is advantage gambling, and advantage gambling is still gambling. "Sooner or later, you'll run worse than you ever thought was possible." ♠️ Poker is interesting, and if you're coming w/ the right mentality, its lessons are very applicable to non-poker arenas. Most situations in life are analyzable w/ expected value (EV). ♠️ Poker is more of a night activity than a day one. This has negative implications for most people and is more of a factor than I used to think when I was younger. ♠️ Lack of emotionality is significantly beneficial in poker, since it's essentially a logic competition w/ a fat chunk of randomness built in. In general, elite players are ice cold. Unfortunately, this has negative implications for one's life outside of poker, like the "night factor" described in the point directly above. Emotionality isn't necessarily something we can turn on and off. ♠️ If you're a winning player who's taking poker seriously, and you know that you legitimately love the game, the sky's the limit; lean into that shit. Don't allow yourself to be swayed by neuroticism from people around you ... same as if you were trying to build a business. Poker is a beautiful game, a worthwhile intellectual competition, and a tool that can play a role in the attainment of freedom and the expansion of one's life. If you truly love and respect the game, chances are it'll love and respect you back. Best of luck. ♠️ (Any questions? Here for 'em.)

Should've obv duct-taped it to a wall before crying. Didn't think of that? Boo hoo. You negligent fuck.

Vivek Ramaswamy, who was supposedly going to play qualifiers earlier today for entry into a Futures tournament (x.com/IndTennisDaily…) but doesn't appear to have done so (?), isn't quite a Futures-quality player (top ~2,500 male players in the world). However, he's a legitimately-very-good tennis player whose current ability comfortably justifies the belief that he was "a nationally-ranked junior" (top ~1,000 male players in the US in "the 18s," a list consisting mostly of 17-18-year-old players). Ramaswamy's UTR profile (app.utrsports.net/profiles/30272…) shows his most recent results as 1. (early 2024) a 6-2, 7-5 win over Brandon Griffin, who was ~400 in the US in the 18s (tennisrecruiting.net/player.asp?id=…) and 2. (late 2022) a 6-4, 7-6 win over Casey Cempre, who was ~200 in the US in the 18s (tennisrecruiting.net/player.asp?id=…). Both opponents played college tennis. btw, like it or not, things like this are relevant to politics: Trump is a legitimately-good golfer. Tim Walz is the worst Crazy Taxi player I've ever seen. Is Kamala Harris good at anything? In general, how you approach one thing is how you approach everything: x.com/r3jvn8/status/… Unimpressive, unaccomplished people shouldn't be making important decisions that affect everyone in our country.

K, I've watched several videos of @VivekGRamaswamy playing tennis. He's for sure decent. I, however, do not believe for a minute that he was a "nationally ranked junior" as so many stories state. I can't even find an Ohio ranking, although he looks good enough to make it here.

He could've retired in 2022 after that magical run he had -- an extended version of what Sampras did ~20 years earlier -- but I don't think the reality is any worse of an outcome. It's more fitting, in a way, given the bruising nature of the guy's career. Still a top-25-caliber

This was special.

RIP. If you want to succeed bigly, you must figure out how to become comfortable being uncomfortable. No two of us are exactly the same, which means that the sorts of discomfort you're relatively comfortable enduring probably won't be the same as the sorts of discomfort those who've accomplished your goal(s) were relatively comfortable enduring. Legitimately-ambitious people bear the burden of figuring certain things out for themselves.

@r3jvn8 chess is generally orthogonal with trading. chess players are strong analytically, so they can occasionally make good quants on specific strategies, but are not good on high variance or second order goals

You're sitting out the PLO bomb pot? How dare you.

@salr_nyc someone once told me that the main thing poker and trading have to do with each other is being willing to sit down and do incredibly boring things all day for edge.

Trading and poker are more similar to each other than trading and chess, and than poker and chess. Trading and poker, unlike chess, are both incomplete-information games featuring a short-term luck element. Unlike chess, trading and poker reward the ability to use expected value-based approaches to establish and maintain monetary edges in incomplete-information arenas. (Of course, all three endeavors reward the ability to perform under pressure in competitive, intellectually-taxing settings.) When I met Steven Schonfeld (who runs Schonfeld Strategic Advisors) in 2011, he told me, "We have tremendous respect for superior poker players." When I interviewed w/ the prop firm at which I ended up starting, my future boss told me that the firm had found that good poker players tend to possess a strong understanding of risk vs. reward. Inexperienced traders w/ profitable poker backgrounds (and inexperienced poker players w/ profitable trading backgrounds) have a lot to learn, and their backgrounds don't guarantee success in the new game. However, their backgrounds are associated w/ an above-average chance of success, given the discussed similarity.

When I starting out, it was chess players not poker players, that the trading houses had a hard-on for. Perhaps poker was not yet fashionable then. Both teach you things. So does working at McDonalds. I'm not really convinced that any of them will make you a better trader.🤷

The best free class on the internet is Poker Theory at MIT. It's taught by portfolio managers at quant shops like Citadel, AQR, SIG and 2 WSOP bracelet winners. You play 5000 hands as practice and learn the math of making money from pros. And it's free.

Winning isn't narrowly defined by forward progress. It's about having clarity. Good example of this is the guy who's restless in his job. Leaves to build a business. Realizes it's not actually what he wanted so he goes back to the workforce From the outside it'll look like he
