Excited to share our new technique for studying IgA binding in the microbiome! Fascinated by IgA since joining the @LabSonnenburg , this work beautifully leverages @SeanPaulSpencer's immunology & my metagenomics expertise to make fundamental discoveries doi.org/10.1101/2023.1…
Congratulations Leah!!
Thrilled to share that I will join @BerkeleyBioE as an Asst Prof. in Jan 2024! My lab will study how diet + microbiome molecules affect tissue homeostasis, focusing on podocyte biology. If interested in applying chemoinformatics and molbio to decipher chemical signals, reach out!
Excited to see our @CellCellPress Resource article out in print today: "Ultra-deep sequencing of Hadza hunter-gatherers recovers vanishing gut microbes." doi.org/10.1016/j.cell… . This article presents a deep dive into the impact of industrialization on the gut microbiome (1/5)
This past Friday, Rebecca Gellman gave a fantastic her thesis presentation on “Differential carbohydrate metabolism shapes colonization by intestinal Bacteroidetes” Congratulation Dr. Gellman! We are excited for her next adventure as a postdoc in the Comstock lab at @UChicago
My first first-author paper is out on biorxiv! Are you curious about how diet influences which bacteria thrive in our gut microbiome? Check it out here: biorxiv.org/content/10.110…. Quick summary (and a dance version!) below 1/

Interesting new study describing the impact of helminth infection on the human gut microbiome. Helminths are parasitic worms, and they were found to infect up to 90% of individuals living in the villages in this study biorxiv.org/content/10.110…
That's an interesting study, clarifying that microbe-dependent metabolite profiles remain highly individual even when consuming the same standardized diet.

Congrats @LeahTGuthrie @GutBugs2! Fascinating study eliminating dietary differences between people to look at gut microbiome metabolic output. Spoiler alert: individualized metabolite profiles are largely maintained when everyone eats the same food! Same diet 🙅 Same metabolites

Very happy to share what we learned when using a dietary intervention study to disentangle the roles of habitual diet and the microbiome in shaping microbiome-dependent metabolite levels.

This is really cool! We also found that VRE "turn on" sorbitol utilization in the GI tract of immunocompromised pediatric patients: pnas.org/content/117/21… We though sorbitol was given exogenously to patients and didn't think about host-derived sorbitol. But we should have!
