This wonderfully lucid review by @MarkChurchland and Krishna Shenoy explains how to think about motor control in terms of population-level factors and their dynamics. A must read. nature.com/articles/s4158…

Preparatory activity and the expansive null-space — a Review by @MarkChurchland & Krishna V. Shenoy go.nature.com/4cczNr9
With joy and some sadness: rdcu.be/dApZJ We enjoyed retracing our intellectual journey, and revisiting the many papers that drove our thinking. As we were drawn to dynamical explanations, preparatory activity was our gateway drug. Work by @MattAntimatt was a key enabler
Thanks very much Mackenzie. I plan on coming back from the twitter-dead soon to post this, but am waiting until they fix Figure 5c so that it renders in Preview. Also I need to think of something clever to tweet. Please proffer suggestions.

Our goal was to leverage recent scientific observations to design a simple BCI decoder. Despite its simplicity, it works extremely well. There are some interesting implications regarding population geometry in motor cortex.

Recently there have been a few memorials to a dear mentor and friend, @shenoystanford. Truthfully, 100 pieces would not do him justice. But those of us who knew him have a responsibility to keep spreading the word about his approach to science, people, and life. 1/
Our farewell to a dear friend.

Super pumped for #cosyne2023 ✨! I’m also humbled, delighted, and honestly nervous to be giving the keynote 😱🤩🤯, so come cheer me on 🤗 Looking forward to seeing many of you there! I’ll present our latest work on uncovering hidden neural dynamics ✨
I *strongly* suspect working in Denise's lab would be a fantastic job and a great way to get into science for someone with that ambition.

Yes, it does a spectacularly good job! Its statistical assumptions are spot on for spiking networks operating in the factor-dynamics regime. Importantly, LFADS can correctly assign a neuron a high rate even for moments where spikes are absent on that trial.

@Fran_Sacadura @briandepasquale @MarkChurchland @NeuroCellPress I'll note that LFADS does a terrific job recovering these mechanistically grounded firing rates. This is something we never fully tested in a ground truth way in the original LFADS paper because we didn't have a fully spiking mechanistic model.

Proud to share this work connecting population-level factors to spiking activity, in @NeuroCellPress! Latent factors are a powerful framework for understanding computation but what are factors? Just an analysis trick? Where are they in a neural circuit? cell.com/neuron/fulltex…

@CianaDeveau @MarkChurchland And ❤️ to Krishna.
@CianaDeveau @MarkChurchland nice review! You might enjoy this result on recurrent function in sensory areas. We don’t know what the output-null spaces look like but my sense is that big picture computational principles may be similar.
Nice video by @MarkChurchland. A billion motor cortex neurons, but motor cortex only sends ~a million axons down to a mere 50,000 motor units (and some inhibitory interneurons?). A motor unit is a motoneuron and the ~ten to ~hundred innervations it makes on a muscle group.…

Excellent article by @MarkChurchland. This time looking at why preparation of a motor reach triggers essentially no motor output. He proposes that often the motor cortex needs to send null or zero-change signal to certain unused or unchanged muscles. And preparation uses this…

It was an incredibly moving experience to gather all the generations of the Shenoy lab for @shenoystanford's memorial, and to see how many people's lives have been fundamentally shaped through the shared experience of having worked together as part of this family.

@NatureNeuro @MarkChurchland This was so beautiful and thought provoking. The challenge of dealing with your own ego is probably one of the hardest aspects of being a scientist, and it is so incredibly inspiring how Krishna took a complete left turn where everyone else goes right.
