Great question. In this possible setup the AI answers the text first, so the customer isn't left waiting. If it's urgent (no heat, a leak, anything with a safety risk), it pings the on-call tech and a backup at the same moment. Whoever confirms first owns the job. If nobody confirms in 10 minutes, it goes to the owner's phone. You're right about the order. Set up the routing first, then turn on text-back.

Before you buy an AI receptionist, ask one question: "What did it score on a test before it answered a real call?" Not the demo. A test. Fake callers asking about prices, emergencies, and things it doesn't know. If it makes up a price, it's not ready. The best receptionist isn't the one that talks the most. It's the one that knows what it doesn't know.

I counted more than 15 new "AI receptionist" brands for HVAC and plumbing on X this weekend. Same promise every time: answers 24/7, books jobs, turns missed calls into revenue. None of them showed a number. Here's the only pitch a shop owner needs: Put in your missed calls per week. Multiply by your average job. That's what voicemail cost you last month. Show them the leak first. Then sell the fix.

The best agencies I see now do the work before the sales call. Before I talk to a shop, I want to know: How many calls they miss. How many quotes are sitting cold in the CRM. What that's worth at their average job. Then the call isn't a pitch. It's me showing them their own found revenue. An AI agent can pull most of that before you ever dial.

If they're unhappy, send it to me instead." None of these replace a tech. They just stop the phone from losing you jobs. Save this one.
