@MissUlbrichOSU A35. This brings up a great point! One strategy I would recommend is having kids model equations with objects before they start writing equations. If they can develop an understanding of what the symbols mean, then it will make more sense in their heads. #OSUElemMath

@MsSomervilleOSU @MissUlbrichOSU A35. I agree! Teaching is all about building on previous knowledge. If the foundation is not solid, then the structure will fall. Teachers need to make sure they are helping kids develop a sound foundation that is flexible in their thinking. #OSUElemMath

@MissMorosky @MrCourtneyOSU A32) I totally agree! As long as students are engaged, motivated, and learning, why would we interfere with that? Trying to rush them would be counterproductive. #OSUElemMath

@MrCourtneyOSU This answer was understood by the student. If the teacher would have used standard units, the student would not have known how tall a cone is in relation to items around her. #OSUElemMath

@MrCourtneyOSU A34) Using nonstandard units for kids with visual impairments is going to make learning meaningful. Today at OSSB a student asked a teacher to describe what a cone looked like. The teacher said its about the same height as a table. This was meaningful and relevant to the student.

Q31) #OSUElemMath

Q30) #OSUElemMath

Q29) #OSUElemMath

@MissJonesOSU @MissTaliahK_OSU A28) At a young age, they are going to count how many objects they have and not consider the wholes if they are cutting them up. They also may not consider equal sizing. #OSUElemMath

@MissTaliahK_OSU A27) I think both are equally important. Body language is so revealing and can show how comfortable the student is solving the problem. However, their language is a window into their thought process and that is crucial to understanding their skills. #OSUElemMath

@MissJonesOSU @MissCarterOSU A25) I agree! In our pedagogy classes we have discussed how kids make their own decisions promotes motivation for learning. I always disliked math in school because teachers were shovin the "right way" down my throat and scolded me when I tried to solve in my own way #OSUElemMath

@MissJonesOSU @MissCarterOSU A23) iPads are a great idea because there are endless possibilities in the app store. In today's day in age, there is an app for everything and everyone. The teacher could let the student be apart of the decision or which app to use, and even get it on home device #OSUElemMath

@MissMorosky A22. A good way to teach groupings is to teach students about money. Coins & dollars are already broken down groupings. Kids will also see the use of $ modeled outside of school. They can continue to develop their understanding of groupings and skills of handling $ #OSUElemMath.

@MissMorosky A21. I believe that this can be applied to all areas in the classroom to enhance learning as long as the teacher creates a fostering environment where all students feel safe. If the kids feel safe, they know they can share their thought process and not be judged. #OSUElemMath

@MeaganClardy A 18) Personally, i would make sure I take the time to get to know my students and their interests and then write problems based off of that. Or, I would have them write their own problems and then have them trade with a partner and figure it out together. #OSUElemMath

@MeaganClardy A 19) To make learning authentic, you have to allow the kids to make their own mistakes. Try setting up lessons to do things they are interested in, like cooking, and making a math lesson out of it to keep them engaged. #OSUElemMath

@MissSmithOSU Q16 A common error I made was I thought adding a zero to a number made it smaller. This is not true because 0 represents nothing. Teachers should teach students what numbers mean before teaching them to add and subtract them. This should give students a better grasp #OSUElemMath

@MissSmithOSU Q14) We have the opportunity to create our own standards for our students. Instead of forcing them to write it all out, we can give them the choice to talk through the problem using tangible items. We need to teach them how to simplify math, not over complicate it. #OSUElemMath

@MissMaynardOSU A)13 I remember re-learning about one-to-one correspondences in Math 1125. It was such a hard concept for me to grasp because I would over think it every time. Obviously, I knew how to count. It was the idea of taking a college level math course that got in my head. #OsuElemMath

@MissMaynardOSU A)12 The one that stuck out to me was that the best way to teach is through teachable moments bc I think this is true. I learn best in situations that are realistic. We should practice making math applicable to student's lives so they understand its importance. #OSUElemMath
