@MissUlbrichOSU The first one is the most important. This is because prior knowledge is essential to knowing our student. This information helps us with our next steps to guide our teaching. #OSUElemMath

@MissMorosky @MissUlbrichOSU Kelsey, I love this idea. Students are able to see a more visual way with this rather than looking at numbers. It would also help if the measuring cups were filled so we can really show our students that it is "equal" #OSUElemMath

@MsSomervilleOSU @MrCourtneyOSU A32 I agree with you Kennedy! All of our students learn at different paces and I think that it is important to emphasize that it is okay to be wherever that are on the chart. #OSUElemMath

@MrCourtneyOSU A34 By using real world objects, the students can practice lining them up and seeing that a table may be 20 apples long or get the idea that standard units are going to measure things. #OSUElemMath

@MrCourtneyOSU A33 I envision task 4 being difficult. The segments on the lines are different lengths, and students could have trouble trying to grasp how long each line would be. In additon, the square shapes seem different sizes so they might go with the on that has bigger shapes #OSUElemMath

@MissRushOSU A31 I think this is because they have more confidence while solving math problems. In addition, there sensible reasoning of manipulative is more understood. If you start by teaching students one way of thinking then they will try too hard in modeling the teacher #OSUElemMath

@MissRushOSU A30 Some ways that families can use to incorporate math could be as simple as cooking in the kitchen. By using recipes they can look at fraction and see the whole and practice dividing up the pieces among the family. (for example: a pizza). #OSUElemMath

@MissRushOSU A29 When student invent algorithms they are using their critical thinking skills in order to develop their strategies. They will now have sensible reason for manipulating numbers because what they created is a strategy itself.

@MissTaliahK_OSU Personally, I like the Additive Coordination sharing one at a time, because trying to split up a candy bar into multiple pieces could be difficult for students to visualize if there physically is not enough for each student. #OSUElemMath

@MissTaliahK_OSU Both are important to a student’s learning. If we watch what they are doing and ask follow up questions and understand their thinking then the student can better understand their work and even notice mistakes if necessary #OSUElemMath

@MissRushOSU @MissJonesOSU @MissTaliahK_OSU #OSUElemMath

@MissRushOSU @MissJonesOSU @MissTaliahK_OSU I agree with both Hannah & Emily! If we can visualize these concepts I think it would be easier for students, especially if we use for example, an apple. We can show our students that if we cut an apple and there are 5 pieces we can show that those 5 pieces go back to the whole.

@MissCarterOSU A25 I agree that all of them are important, but providing the quick fix stood out. This is because if you quickly notice the mistakes the students will start to be more detailed and pay attention to them.

@MissCarterOSU A24 I've seen number 5 when adding or subtracting (for example) 51+23 you are also adding 50+1+20+3 and they represent different digits/amounts. Modeling with the baseten blocks can help visualize because they can see "10 small blocks" in "1 long" #OSUElemMath

@MissCarterOSU When teaching basic facts using actual manipulatives or object can help. If you give objects that show symmetry or exact multiples it can help the students visualize. With VI students they can feel the symmetry to help them memorize #OSUElemMath

@MissJonesOSU @MissMorosky I agree with you Hannah! I think it’s extremely important to be aware of what each student individually needs in order for them to be successful

@MissMorosky Something that I think that students could really benefit from is using those blocks to stack and represent 100s, 10s, or 1s. Students are able to visually see what is happening that will help with future adding or subtraction problems. #OSUElemMath

@MissMorosky A21 We can have sessions where we come together and share out our ideas like circle time. And students can come up to the board to explain. Or we can even put students into groups based off of the different strategies children tend to use to learn from each other. #OSUElemMath

@MissMorosky Teaching our students new vocabulary can be key. If we teach our students new concepts or vocabulary we can start using complex language that will offer more critical thinking. It is important to listen to our students to see where they are at so we can differentiate #OSUElemMath
