He's not on social media any more (but doing well last we chatted) but I wrote a book with the most inquiry-minded teacher that has likely ever existed and even he wouldn't do the things critics are claiming is "inquiry teaching." What they're doing isn't even a good parody.

Inquiry learning is bad because the learning and teaching become a bit messy and no one ever in the history of the world learns like that in real life and the teacher has to be able to control all the questions and have the right answers all of the time.
Did you know all inquiry based teaching methods are bad because telling 4 year olds the meaning of a word they’ve never seen before is more efficient than asking them to guess the meaning of a word they’ve never seen before???

@MrAleoSays Edutwitter is mind boggling - that people cannot understand that different teaching methods serve different purposes across different contexts and that understanding the benefits & limitations of each and how they complement each other is what effective teaching looks like.

“Sure, they read a bunch of texts from different perspectives, but the course is totally focused on one perspective” if this sort of thing convinces you then nothing would make you think otherwise

What I've learned from #edutwitter lately: -Inquiry learning is bad. -Direct instruction is bad. -SEL is bad. -Rules are bad. -Educational research is bad. -Phonics is bad. -Balanced literacy is bad. -Quizzes and tests are bad. -Projects are bad. Anything else I am missing?
So many people are so unserious when they talk about instruction v inquiry. Hyperbole, false generalisations, false comparisons. And then look in the camera 'gotcha'. If you pretend to care about evidence stop such a deeply unserious stance.

I think it's worth being clear that the classroom approaches promoted under the name of DI, di or 'explicit teaching' in recent years have been advocated with the explicit intention of rejecting interactivity, dialogue, discovery, investigation, group work etc not alongside. 5/
Carol Atherton's recent book, 'Reading Lessons', explores what reading & studying books has to offer if taught in ways that *do* elicit students responses in genuinely interactive ways, with teacher & students engaged in dialogue & teachers both offering & receiving ideas. 4/
'Explicit' offers of information, knowledge & thinking from the teacher is, of course, part & parcel of good teaching but the interactive aspect (so different from this example) involves teasing out ideas & probing thinking in 'episodes' of whole class dialogue, or peer talk. 3/
