@CovingtonEDU @joshua_r_eyler THIS!!⬆️ We've lost our True North. When we let the magnetic forces of our education system (time constraints, curriculum programs, fads, etc.) pull us off course we lose our way. When we center student learning as our True North, we think and act differently.

Any university that allows snipers on the roof of campus buildings in response to a nonviolent student protest is not place of higher learning.
College presidents calling in the police to quell peaceful protests at any time for any reason is a betrayal of their office and their mission. We are not talking about instigations of violence here; we're talking about students asking to be heard.

Why does @educationweek, a respected outlet, continue to base its coverage about grades on “studies” by the Fordham Institute, a right-wing think tank that’s been clear they don’t believe in equity in education. This is just another example of that. edweek.org/teaching-learn…

@CovingtonEDU @joshua_r_eyler THIS!!⬆️ We've lost our True North. When we let the magnetic forces of our education system (time constraints, curriculum programs, fads, etc.) pull us off course we lose our way. When we center student learning as our True North, we think and act differently.
@joshua_r_eyler The purpose of school then becomes less about a space for learning and more as a space where specific units of content are delivered at the requisite rate by a particular curriculum. 😩
@joshua_r_eyler Yeah, the pushback we get from Ts when we try to talk about changing structures to accommodate, say, interdisciplinary PBL is "But where will we fit in X?" (Where X is a particular math/science/English program/curriculum)

@joshua_r_eyler I feel like I just had this exact conversation on LinkedIn. The person was referring to an article that compares 'progressive' education to the Reign of Terror in 18th century France... and none of my own questions were responded to. All I got was dogma.
@joshua_r_eyler @educationweek The thing that stands out to me is the apparently unexamined equation of "higher scores on standardized tests" with "more student learning."
@john_seelke @joshua_r_eyler How we assess student learning is steeped in a LONG history of education culture, policy, power, and priorities. It is a long, hard fight. I'm grateful and inspired by folks like @joshua_r_eyler who are pushing us to not cave to "it's not within our control."
@john_seelke @joshua_r_eyler Thanks for clarifying. 2 thoughts: 1. Any time we center TIME over STUDENT LEARNING we've lost our way. If something has been shown to be incredibly valuable, we need to make adjustments to make it possible. We can't keep using time as an excuse. (easier said than done.)
Amen to this. Students aren't saints. They aren't above reproach and I think they sometimes go about things in ways that are counterproductive or that I wouldn't do, but they deserve the respect of their own agency, particularly at institutions meant to serve them.
I freely admit that some students’ behaviour gets on my nerves. I don’t think every protest is right or done well. I hope I never show the kind of casual, general contempt for students articulating their convictions some faculty senior to me are letting slip at a dangerous time.
Just emailed my book to @routledgebooks. So honored to work alongside @BradleyKBusch and @Inner_Drive. The support from them has been nothing short of epic. I don't know exactly how I feel right now...but exhausted and proud come to mind.

@joshua_r_eyler @john_seelke Absolutely. The more we ask questions, grapple, study, experiment, ... you know - science - ... the better we'll get at assessing learning and communicating the progress on that learning with all invested parties.
@eduleadership There is no unbiased science. Joshua’s point is that Ed week should be drawing on multiple empirical Studies not just the ones by conservative ideologues
@john_seelke I can tell some of it is copy/paste chunks, but it tells me a whole lot more than just a letter grade. Grading reform is still in its infancy. I'm listening and learning before staking a claim on what is best, but I don't support letter grades. It's complicated.
