Trying to look for positives and the Dolphins ability to run the ball has been one of the few...but the crew at @OffScheduleFB dug a little deeper and reveals that success is not coming on early downs. Interesting stuff (and definitely check out offschedulefootball.com)
@AtlantaFalcons Put an offense behind the sticks and this Falcons D usually wins. After a negative play on 1st or 2nd down, teams move the chains 41% of the time (12 of 29), 10th best.
Late they had Baltimore at 1st and 20 and down 8. Then a 29 yard PI. Drive extended, game extended, and a loss
@MarkBullockNFL Washington doesn't bounce back from a setback. After a sack, a loss or its own flag on 1st or 2nd down, it averages 1.2 points from that spot, 32nd. League average is 2.3.
Sunday's OT in one play: tied, in field goal range, a 2nd down sack, and the game ended with no kick.
@SamHoppen One layer under success rate: what a set of downs does after a negative play on 1st or 2nd down.
Week 5, those sets moved the chains 46% of the time. Clean sets, 76%. The season looks the same, 45% vs 77%.
@ProFootballTalk Bailey's 3 sacks: one on 1st down, two on 3rd down. Both 3rd down drives punted.
Then Browns down 17-12, 1:07 left. He hits Watson on 3rd and 6. On 4th and 11 he knocks the ball loose and the Jets recover. Ballgame.
@Broncos That's how Denver wins a one score game. The Broncos took a sack, a run for a loss or their own flag on 1st or 2nd down on just 4 of 27 sets. The Chargers did it on 11 of 25, and the 8 drives that had one got them 10 points and 2 turnovers.
@Seahawks@BECU Seattle lost by 3 and the early downs tell it. Seven Seahawks drives had a sack, a run for a loss or their own flag on 1st or 2nd down. Those seven: 6 points, two turnovers and a Niners touchdown going the other way. The other eight drives scored 23.
@Vikings The defense did it again. New Orleans took a sack, a run for a loss or its own flag on 1st or 2nd down on 8 of its 16 sets of downs. Half its day was played behind the sticks. Coming in, Minnesota already forced one on 29% of sets, 2nd most in the league.
@NFL@BALvsATL@NFLPlus Falcons got the ball back. Both of their takeaways before tonight turned into touchdown drives, 14 points. Watch what the offense does with this one.
@lastdanceszn Seahawks D in the backfield again. They've forced a negative play in 1st or 2nd down in 29 of 98 sets this year, 30%. Most in the league.
@SNBToday Appreciate you Scott. Bowers is a problem for anybody, and he's earned every one of those targets. Hoping today's the day they get the receivers going too.
@ProFootballTalk Daniels back means early downs matter again. When Washington stays clean on 1st and 2nd down it scores 3.2 points a set. After a sack, a run for a loss or its own flag, 1.2. Only the Raiders and Seahawks fall off more than that.
@LVGully@SNBToday@BleavNetwork Fair guess, but the numbers say they do throw it deep. 17 of 144 throws went 20+ yards in the air, right at league average, and on 3rd and 7+ they throw it farther than most. The bigger gap is who gets it: 42% of targets go to wideouts, last in the league.
@LVGully@SNBToday@BleavNetwork Appreciate you sharing it. The Raiders have been a fun one to dig into. If there's anything else you want run on them, just say the word.
@SNFonNBC@Ravens@AtlantaFalcons@NFL@NBCSports Precision is the right word. Atlanta's offense has taken a sack, a run for a loss or its own flag on 16 of 105 sets, 2nd fewest in the league. Baltimore's defense forces one on 17% of sets, 6th fewest. If the Ravens can't knock the Falcons behind the sticks, that's a long night.
@PlzBeGoodHurts@Tim_McManus Fair, and if it shows up anywhere it's early downs. Through Week 4 Philly took a sack, a loss or its own flag on 1st or 2nd down in 29 of 88 sets, most in the league. Sunday in London is the first real look at the new group.
@ProFootballTalk Same record, two different problems. The Chargers take a sack, a loss or their own flag on 1st or 2nd down in 30% of their sets, 2nd most in the league. Houston gets hit less, but when it does, it's scored a touchdown on just 2 of 18 drives. League is about 1 in 4.
The box score just says two picks. We chart every snap with the down, distance, field position and score, then follow it to what the drive did and how the game ended. Same goes for every 3rd and long, negative play and flag that wiped out a stop.
Dallas stayed ahead of the sticks: 3 of 26 sets had a negative play on 1st or 2nd down (12%, league rate 21%). Five trips inside the Tampa 30. Lost 24-16.
The two empty trips came in tough spots. 3rd and 3 down 14-10, picked, Tampa TD next. 2nd and 1 down 8 late, picked.
