In his judgement call as chief custodian of a bipartisan mandate, Trump has rightly accused these outlets of weaponising privileged access to the White House to repeatedly produce false, negative and unfair coverage of his administration. His position is straightforward: no media house is entitled to White House access. The call is further necessitated following reported incidents relating to security and accuracy. For many decades, low to no public trust has continued to plague traditional legacy media even as millions of Americans decry the worsening worrisome partisan media coverage. Trump first sought to confront this issue with the introduction of ‘new media’ alternatives to the white house press pool in January 2025. In an age where social media companies are being penalised for failing to regulate content shown to users, Trump’s decision is, in fact, an attempt to demand greater accountability from media organizations with power to influence public opinion. The access revocation in no way prevents CNN, MS NOW or Politico from reporting on Trump. Nevertheless, the football community is entitled to demand clarity about the real issues driving this confrontation. The unprecedented nature of the situation makes that clarity even more important. FIFA has endured serious corruption scandals involving senior officials, including individuals investigated and indicted for football related misconduct. Yet pursuing a sitting FIFA President over a commercial proposal that was ultimately withdrawn represents a remarkable escalation. If there is credible evidence of a criminal offence, it should be presented and tested through due process.
